Feeding chickens *WITHOUT* chicken pellets ??

Maybe this is relevant... I didn't make my own feed, but there is a very bourgeois feed store in Dallas that sells small batch whole grain feed. It is supposed to be nutritionally complete. I tried feeding it to my chickens. First of all it did smell and look great. Big whole grains (corn...

    Considering some Whiting Tru Blues

Have not heard great things about their temperaments. I got Easter edgers instead which give me pretty bluish greenish eggs and are also great pets and very healthy.

Which Chickens to get for new flock?

My leghorns lay extra large, white eggs. Every. Single. Day. It's amazing! But, they were bullies to the others for a long time (first 4-5 months together), but now things have settled down. They seem to be right at home in the summer Texas heat. The easter eggers also did well and are the...

    Texas

Have y’all noticed a steep drop off in egg production in the past week? I use supplemental light (6am-8pm) and until 7-10 days ago I was getting 5-7 eggs per day from my 7 girls. Now I am getting 2-4 per day. Nothing else I can think of has changed other than the cold front we had earlier in the...

Automatic or manual that is the question

Not yet, hopefully this weekend. I have to redo the trim that was around the door and repaint.

Weird dust bathing and pecking at bedtime

Yes they do have lots of places (the run is sand, and they have a kiddie pool dust bath with sand, peat moss, and a little DE. They have been laying for a couple months. I saw her doing the same thing this evening when I closed them up for the night.

Weird dust bathing and pecking at bedtime

No molting yet. They hatched in March. They are fed later pellets. Occasional snacks include BOSS, dried mealworms, kale, and pecking through my flower beds when I let them. They all lay almost every day. This one (well 50/50 chance since there is another EE) laid a sort of weird egg today...

Weird dust bathing and pecking at bedtime

one of my girls was making a ruckus tonight at bed time. She was furiously dust bathing and pecking like crazy into the sand/pdz/poop mix on my poop board below the roosts. It looked like she was trying to break up the dried poop and was eating it. It was so gross! I tried to stop her but she...

    First egg from Easter egger

I have had the same experience with varying tints in my two EEs. At first I was excited to have one green and one blue layer. But now they seem to have both settled into light mint green. Still pretty though!

    Used coop disinfection

I recently did this. First step was disassembly and power wash. Then I sprayed the whole thing with diluted bleach. Then after it dried I ended up painting the whole interior and caulking all the crevices. The caulk was more to eliminate mite hidey holes than disease. I doubt anything could...

    Strange...trumpeting noises? What?

Ah I saw another person reply they were in CO but it wasn’t the OP. My mistake! Yes, deer can make some weird noises, like groans grunts and moans. And a baaaa like a sheep.

    Strange...trumpeting noises? What?

If you are in CO it very well could have been an Elk that you heard. That may or may not have been the same animal you saw though. Like perhaps you actually saw a fox but it was chasing an elk and the elk made the trumpet sound as an alarm call to the herd.

    Super weird egg!

I think whatever ate that demon egg may have a wee bit of indigestion!

Why are my chickens’ egg yolks regular yellow?

It was organic Purina layer pellets. This bag was another brand of organic layer pellets, but I forgot the brand. They get some treats, mostly black oil sunflower seeds and dried mealworms. Maybe one handful per day on average between the seven of them. The leghorns started laying over two...
