Alternative for Vaseline for frostbite prevention.

Oh and my girls would wing-flog me if I didn’t let them outside regardless of temperature! The coop is a large walk in with plenty of extra room but they still go outside. They have a large run that I wrap the walls in clear tarps to reduce drafts and blizzard winds so they are just as...

Alternative for Vaseline for frostbite prevention.

Yes, my boy Albert is 1/2 Leghorn and his comb shows it. So far only the very tips have rounded so his comb is still quite sunning. Unfortunately he has lost 2 toe tips to frostbite on one foot. I believe he walked in a puddle outside at some point. He has a funny little limp now but it doesn’t...

Alternative for Vaseline for frostbite prevention.

Thank you I already addressed these points when I responded to a previous comment. My coop never had water inside and is scooped daily to prevent fecal moisture. It is well ventilated above their heads under the eves. The super dry bedding is quite deep depending on where they are scratching...

Alternative for Vaseline for frostbite prevention.

Yes, ventilation is paramount of importance. I built my walk in coop with all open eves covered with only 1/2 inch hardware cloth. I don’t allow water or food in the coop. Poop is scooped every day to prevent it’s moisture becoming a problem. It is extremely dry in my coop. My boy has a large...

They have unlimited fresh water supply every. But thank you for that insight. 🙏🏻

Serama Rooster holding wings away from body

What is he eating lately? Something new in his diet causing stool problems? Is he a house pet chicken? If so does he go outside? Could he have eaten something outside? Or inside that isn’t good?

Alternative for Vaseline for frostbite prevention.

It seems I’m out of Vaseline for my roosters comb. It’s dropping to freezing at night now and I’m not getting to the store for a day or two. I have bacitracin on hand, also neosporin without the pain reliever. I thought to use coconut oil but wondered if it would stick or just melt off. Any...

12 weeks 3 days old SLW mix. Cockerel??

Thank you! I am not very well versed in genetics so I didn’t know an SLW could have a straight comb. Yes this chickens comb and wattles color is exactly what concerns me about gender. I guess I’m also just not able to believe my good fortune. I had six unsexed day old chicks expecting half to...

12 weeks 3 days old SLW mix. Cockerel??

I’ve posted my chicks at different ages. The last one was at 8 weeks and everyone believed all three of my SLW were pullets. 2 of them have rose combs. One has a straight comb so is obviously a mix. This one still concerns me. What do y’all think?

Joel Salatin is a well known expert in all things chicken (and all things homesteading for that matter). I learned to process my birds from this video. He is respectful of the life and of its total value.

Thanks! There’s 3 but other than the one without a rose comb it’s hard to tell them apart. Two have rose comb.

I’ll be trying to get pictures of the Speckled Sussex. They’re harder to find differences so I’m never sure I didn’t actually take pictures of the same bird over and over. 🤣

That is what I was thinking. One of them does not have a rose comb. Lacing quality isn’t paramount for me. I’m not showing them. Just loving them. 🥰 No rose comb on left. Rose comb and the most white on right No rose comb. Rose comb. Most white. No rose comb Rose comb. Less white.

Good to know about the white on the silver laced Wyandottes. Thank you! I’ll try to take some stop-action screenshots 👍🏻
