    Pullet’s legs/feet not working

Thank you all for your help! I ended up culling her because she wasn’t improving and her quality of life was so poor. I read so many threads hoping to read about the progress of the birds to help me decide to cull vs keep treating her, but most people understandably never update threads. My...

    Pullet’s legs/feet not working

I have a 4 month old Polish pullet whose legs seem to have stopped working last week. She has always been lively and picks at food, but her crop has been pretty empty the past few days. At first, she mostly lid down but could walk a few steps on her hocks. She seemed to get better the next day...

    Silkie ~1 year old

I took in a Silkie recently, no crowing but not convinced it’s a hen!

    1 year old splash Silkies

Recently, I picked up 3 splash Silkies, supposedly hens, who were destined to be meat birds if you can believe it. They are supposedly one year old. They look pretty rough physically (broken beaks, dirty) and certainly don’t love humans so I tried to get some pictures without stressing them out...

How likely to lay this year?

My April babies just started laying in the past few weeks. I had given up most hope for eggs this year. The wait is certainly painful! But I’m confident you will have eggs within a few weeks! One of my pullets started laying two weeks after reddening and squatting.

    When do muffs appear?

Thank you, all for your help, especially with the photo examples! I think for some reason I’m just hopeless at identifying muffs right now. :barnie

    When do muffs appear?

I have 8 week old Easter Eggers. They are splashes from Rural King, so I believe they came from Hoover’s. I can’t see evidence of muffs yet but hope they have them. Should they have grown in by now?

4+ week olds McMurray Layer Mix—a box of mysteries!

Cream legbars are autosexing, meaning male vs female chicks can be identified at hatch! The 90% sexing accuracy is for vent sexing.

    Same layer or new?

I’ve been butt checking them frequently (phenomenal article that I reference often @aart!), and the only other one who is over two fingers is a lavender Marans from Mt. Healthy. I have 1 OE, 1 CCL, and 2 lavender Marans. The CCL should lay blue, but she’s been stumping me because for 4-6...

    Same layer or new?

For the past month, I have only had one layer from my four 25 week old pullets. My “olive” egger consistently lays light brown eggs. I have only gotten one today and my husband reports our layer was in the nest box earlier today. Yesterday’s egg was lighter than previous eggs, but today’s is...

Common knowledge that an inexperienced person should know?

Baby chicks will inevitably develop what seems like a tumor around their chest and feels like the end of the world. It is just a cropful of food and will go away overnight or if food is taken away from them!

19 week old losing tail feathers?

My 19 week old Lavender Marans has lost tail feathers over the past couple days. She is down to two long feathers. Her sister, same breed and age, has a full tail. She has always been a slow developer compared to her sister, so I’m wondering if this is a late juvenile molt. There was a time...

    April Babies Egg Watch Thread

My “olive” egger laid her first egg today at 18 weeks and 2 days! She had started nesting two days ago, but it was in the middle of the run. The other three juveniles seem several weeks away from laying, and my post-broody hen seems close to getting back to paying her keep!
