I think it depends on whether you're going to keep the pool to adulthood, but I think 1' is better for ducklings. I had several adult Rouen's and they did fine in a 1' pool. They couldn't fully dive and submerge but it was enough for them to take a bath and have fun.

Now addressing the sour crop issue: the chick that threw up fluid should be monitored carefully. Throwing up fluid from the beak is a prime sign that your bird has sour crop, but I haven't seen it happen very often in chicks. See if it is drinking water or eating food. I'm pretty sure poultry...

From your description of your chicks, they don't seem to be sick in any way, except for bulging crop. Your chicks might not know where the food and water are, and that could be all. Also, as @BDutch mentioned, never hold your birds upside down since that will block their airflow.

Could be a runt. Give the chick electrolytes and Nutridrench if you can get it. Give a little Nutridrench or electrolytes by the drops. Don't give too much, maybe 1 - 2 drops. I don't believe chicks will immediately start eating food 24 hours after hatching that frequently but still make sure...

Hmmm... my only other guess is a disease among your chicks as my quail died the same exact way (Same symptoms too). I pretty sure they are too weak and are not getting enough nutrients or something along that line. Maybe @Nabiki could help.

If your chicks are falling on their backs, then there is a serious problem. I've had several of my birds die that way (They can't breathe well in that position). Also added with panting, these symptoms make me think that your chicks do not have adequate ventilation. Is the brooder airy and...
