Need help improving our predator defenses!

I have a friend who's husband got into a tug-of-war with a hawk with a hen in it's clutches!! We have a smaller run wrapped around with the hen house in one corner so they can get behind it for coolness in the hot summers, and a lot of places covered where they can hide. The run is about 3 x...

    Introducing new chickens to flock

Hi Alan, I have tried that and it did work. If you don't have a brooding or laying hen, you could put them under warm lights (DON"T us led or fluorescent lights) use the incandescent red lights, then we put a group of newbies when they get feathers in a cage inside the pen or hen house...so...

Reintroducing 3 Week Old Chicks Ti The Flock

Dear MrsFaulkner, We usually put our chicks once they have their feathers, out into a "Chick Condo" my husband made for the newbies to be in for a week or 2 that is inside the main chicken run. They have their own little house and a small run. This way the other chickens get used to them being...

Comment by 'Califas77' in article 'Top Ways To Keep Your Chickens Cool In Summer'

All the ideas are great!! I also put the sprinkler on in the chicken run to get the moisture levels up before I leave for the day to work then leave off as we live in a very dry area. That really seems to help. Cucumbers zucchinis and watermelon are very cooling in nature and help them stay...

How do I incorporate one single hen into an established flock?

I usually make a little fenced off area in the chicken coop area for the new hen(s) and put in there for a few days, then let them run around with the others in a large area...like in the yard, larger than their normal run area. If they are ok, I'll let them roost with the rest of the flock...

    Protein percentage

Thanks humble hill!! Are those grubs you can get in feed stores considered "bad" treats? I thought they'd be more protein.

Could this design really house six chickens?

That looks way too small for 6 chickens to me...more like for 3, or for a chicken tractor. It looks like you have land around it, so I would build a bigger run around the whole thing and lock them in the unit you've shown here at night for protection. Good luck!
