Hi Alan, I have tried that and it did work. If you don't have a brooding or laying hen, you could put them under warm lights (DON"T us led or fluorescent lights) use the incandescent red lights, then we put a group of newbies when they get feathers in a cage inside the pen or hen house...so...

I am also in heat wave region...we get this every year. Feed the chickens daily, fresh greens, lettuce etc. Watermelon and cucumbers they also love and they are cooling. I put the sprinkler under different bushes each day and rotate this. Make sure they have lot of water vessels to drink...

I usually make a little fenced off area in the chicken coop area for the new hen(s) and put in there for a few days, then let them run around with the others in a large area...like in the yard, larger than their normal run area. If they are ok, I'll let them roost with the rest of the flock...

Thanks humble hill!! Are those grubs you can get in feed stores considered "bad" treats? I thought they'd be more protein.

How much is too much kitchen scrap to give layer hens? I give mine collard greens or kale everyday...grow it specially for them. Is this affecting their laying??? did not know this would be an issue!! Thanks everyone!! great comments...

That looks way too small for 6 chickens to me...more like for 3, or for a chicken tractor. It looks like you have land around it, so I would build a bigger run around the whole thing and lock them in the unit you've shown here at night for protection. Good luck!
