    Chick feed to layer

I am surprised! Chewy has the layer feed I buy for my hens. The chick feed only comes in a 10# bag tho and is waaay too expensive. Actually, both are too expensive. The layer feed is $5-$6 more for a 40# bag, depending if I do auto-ship, than what I pay at the feed store just down the road. For...

    Chick feed to layer

I will check out Chewy but I doubt they have organic soy-free feed.

    Chick feed to layer

Most chicken feed (All Flock, etc), has lots of soy in them. I can't eat eggs from chickens that have been fed soy... store bought or otherwise. I am allergic to soy so eating soy fed chicken eggs make me sick. Because of this, I need to feed my chickens organic soy-free feed (I like the idea...

    Chick feed to layer

I think so. I do remember them saying switch at 16 weeks tho, not 18. My pullets did go through it pretty fast before I starting free ranging them.

    Chick feed to layer

I appreciate the education.👍 I guess I should come here for my questions again instead of listening to the people at the feed store. sigh They were telling me to change over when I ran out of the bag of chick feed.🙄

    Chick feed to layer

Okay... guess I am stuck buying more chick feed. 😑 Can you answer these question then? Why wait until they are laying? I thought the change over was more age related? They are 13 weeks old, when do you think is the soonest I can start them on the organic 18% layer pellet feed? Thanks!🙂

    Chick feed to layer

I have four pullets, 2 EEs (one in pic) and 2 white pullets (breed? See pic), that are 13 weeks old now. I have been feeding them organic crumbles 22% chick feed. They went through it fast and I am almost out of the 40# bag I bought them. I doubt I will need a full 40# bag but I don't think the...

    Pullet has broken toe

These pullets were bought at the feed store so I don't know how the hens (mothers) were raised or fed. This one is the runt of the 2 EE pullets I bought so you may be right? I am hoping she will be okay and not have any problems with the other hens. Thank you for your suggestions and advice! :)

    Pullet has broken toe

Do you have any idea as to why the second (outer) toe went crooked after I posted about her original crooked toe? Just seems odd. Do you think she will have problems perching once she is with the rest of the flock?

    Pullet has broken toe

Sorry, it took me forever to get a focused photo of her toes. I am free ranging them now and she is super active running everywhere. However, since posted about her, she now has 2 toes that are bent or broken!🥺 Originally it was just the middle toe.The leg looks thinner also but that could be...

    Pullet has broken toe

She was 4 weeks when I got her so if it is a birth defect, it was already too late to fix it. Thanks for the link. I am going to try to get a pic tonight, if I can't, I will get one tomorrow and post it.

    Pullet has broken toe

Hmmm... I am really not sure. I guess it looks crooked but I just assumed it was broken. If it is either of what you suggested, how will "genetics" or "improper feeding of the adult stock" affect the pullet when she is at laying age? I will try to get a pic of her toe so you can see what it...

    Pullet has broken toe

I just started letting my four 12 week old pullets out to free range and noticed my one of them has a broken toe. I have no idea when she might have broke it. They had, until now, been in deep pine shavings so their feet were usually hidden. She could have done it anytime before or after I...

    Best breed to attack hawks

I free range my chickens during the day and have never had a hawk attack in the 11 years I have owned my property. There is a major rodent problem around here so maybe that's the reason... the hawks, thankfully, seem to be very busy going after them instead. We mainly have Cooper's Hawks tho and...

An update on my broody hen and her chicks

I figured it might be a tight space... trying to figure out how to enlarge it. Financially not in the budget at the moment tho unless I can find some used wood and repurpose it for an add on. The 3 nesting boxes hang on the outside so I can access them from there and I only have a one gallon...
