Ask FDA to approve implants for chickens to prevent egg production

I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who has contributed to all sides of this topic. This has been a healthy discussion with many viewpoints brought to the table. For a while this lay stagnant and I wondered if anyone would read but now it's got us all thinking and discussing, which is...

Miss Peep sounds precious. I feel for you and her. We can't really blame the doctors, it's the way the law is. I had the same experience. I realize there are some doctors who will do the right thing anyway, which is wonderful, but it shouldn't have to be so hard. Thank you for signing and giving...

You are right. The main problem is exactly that.

Clover is a sweet name. She must have been very pretty, that cross sounds nice. Sometimes there really isn't much we can do but love them the best we can. Clover left this world too soon but it wasn't anyone's fault. It was her time to go.

What I don't understand is why chicken lovers are against FDA green lighting this drug? It's an option. If it was green lighted you don't have to use it, but wouldn't it be nice to know you could if you wanted to? The drug is allowed for Ferrets and Horses... why not Chickens? Even if you are...

That's not a particularly good comparison. That poor girl was already sick and laying lash eggs (puss pockets). The implant stopped the lash eggs but she has a lot going on. I would not be so quick to say implants are a bad idea. Imagine if she was healthy when first implanted?

What was her name? I'm sorry you and she went through that experience but you did what you could for her. You kept her inside and cared for her and comforted her. Prolapse is sad to see. Imagine if she was implanted at an early age? She would not have prolapsed and surgery would not be...

Ask FDA to approve implants for chickens to prevent egg production

That's debatable. Certainly egg laying is something chickens naturally do and so it would be natural to keep them laying eggs... if only they didn't lay so many. We certainly "fix" dogs and cats before they ever get pregnant, at a young age. We "fix" our human problem but "break" the animal from...

Ask FDA to approve implants for chickens to prevent egg production

Many were adopted so I don't know for sure what breeds they were. The one who complained the most about laying was a Lakenvelder. We had a Silkie who laid a lot of eggs but when you read about them they say they are not prolific layers but that was not our experience. The eggs were small but...

That's right, they are pets :-) I'll never forget the time I purchased some wild bird seed from Southern States. The cashier overheard my wife and I talking. When we rang up at the cash register she couldn't help but say "This is rather expensive for chickens don't you think?" All I could say...

Thank you Pampered chicken girl. Maybe someday breeders will start selectively breeding to lay less number of eggs. Right now they won't because there is not demand but maybe soon there will be with more people like you and I. The drug seems like a good way to help birds today if it was more...

Healthy birds who eventually became unhealthy after 5 to 7 years of life. Could not get them implanted when they were young. Could not get them implanted when they started to have problems but... it's already a bit too late at that point as ovarian cancer had already set in. Even when they were...

While AMDUCA is nice, it's a big gray area. In particular: "Keep in mind that AMDUCA does not give veterinarians "carte blanche" for extralabel use of medications" The following additional conditions must be met for ELDU in food-producing animals: Such use must be accomplished in accordance...

A simple human readable reference is here: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/deslorelin In that link it says only ferrets and female horses are FDA approved. Here you can see that it it is only approved for ferrets by reading the box label, the title, and the fine print...
