Comment by 'AquaEgger' in article 'Meet the Chooks - Critically Endangered Chicken Breeds'

I know this is an old article, but I thought I'd let you know that my local hatchery has Mottled Javas! They are not hatching this year for 2024, but they will continue selling next spring! Hilltop Farms, Corona, CA https://hilltopfarmspoultry.com/shop/mottled-java

Breeding blue egg laying Olandsk Dwarfs?

Thanks for taking the time to type out the gene info for the Cream Legbar! It would have taken me a couple hours to research what you wrote in a few minutes. 🙂 Luckily they do lay white eggs, but some of them look more tinted than others. Hopefully by selecting the whiter eggs I can get nice...

Breeding blue egg laying Olandsk Dwarfs?

Also thank you for telling me about the test! I'm sure I will use that when I get to F4 to check which roosters and hens are homozygous for the blue egg gene.

Breeding blue egg laying Olandsk Dwarfs?

@UncleChuck @NatJ Thank you guys so much for your input! Oh gosh, I totally forgot to consider the comb! I suppose if I wanted to stay true to the breed, the single comb would be best. I am honestly interested in seeing how all the pairings would work out! Cream Legbars and Whiting True Greens...

Breeding blue egg laying Olandsk Dwarfs?

Hi all, So I recently fell in love with Olandsk Dwarfs. They are so pretty, and I just love the mille fleur coloring! They are a pretty scarce breed, so I am considering breeding them to the SOP and selling eggs and chicks. However, I also love colored eggs, and I was thinking of having a...

    Who should I introduce first???

I've got an update! I introduced all the chickens to each other two days ago, and it went off without a hitch! They are doing great. My rooster immediately started showing off for the older hens, and they started following him around immediately. It seems like they could care less about the...

    Who should I introduce first???

Hi all! Sorry, I wasn't checking on this post and I didn't realize there were more replies! @RedwoodCoastChick @aart So the current size of the main coop is 4x8, with a run that is 8x12. I am going to expand the run to 12x20 when I put them all together. They each have their own feeders and...

    Who should I introduce first???

@NatJ @Folly's place Thank you! I would have never thought of doing it like that, I'm glad I asked! I'm off to rearrange the pens, I'll be back in a few weeks if I run into any hiccups 😂

    Who should I introduce first???

I plan to keep them in separate pens next to each other for a few weeks. Once they are used to that, I plan to slowly let them free-range together under supervision. Then repeat for a few days until I'm sure they can be put together in the same coop.

    Who should I introduce first???

Hi chicken people! ❤️ So I have three different groups of chickens, and I wanted some suggestions on who I should introduce to who first! I just want to make it easier on everyone involved. Sorry for all the questions, this is the first time I've had a rooster and this many hens! Group 1: Two...

Should I sell Cream Legbars, Appenzeller Spitzhaubens, or Lemon Owlbeards?

Yes, Greenfire Farms. I bought hatching eggs from them. I had to keep checking their site every week to see when they became available. They sell out super fast!

Spitzhaubens, what are their personalities like?

I have two silver Appenzeller Spitzhauben hens that I absolutely adore! They are very sweet in my opinion. They are very curious and will come right up to me. I didn't handle mine at all as chicks, and today I attempted to pet them and they almost let me, first try! I think hand raising them and...

Should I sell Cream Legbars, Appenzeller Spitzhaubens, or Lemon Owlbeards?

Hi all, I am planning on breeding and selling chicks locally. I have read a lot of posts about which breeds to sell, but I can't find much discussion about these breeds. So, Cream Legbars I know sell really well in my area. I've been trying to buy some for myself and they are sold out before I...
