I have a RIR girl who's probably about 4 months old...I got her and two others from a friend. His have been healthy. I lost one of them two weeks ago to extreme weakness, weight loss, and foul-smelling poop with dirty behind. (No lice or mites.) Now another has similar symptoms, only I...
This is probably common sense, but I was surprised. I just went to use my bottle of Corid and discovered that there was mildew on the inside of the cap. It's not expired yet. I almost didn't see it but am glad I caught it before giving it to the girls. So, it's possible for it to get moldy.
I am late to reply to this old thread, but my experience wasn't the best. Customer service was friendly. But of the 5 chicks I ordered, one died (bantam leghorn - the whole reason I went with MPC), and two ended up being cockerels (golden laced polish and a silkie). I have two easter eggers...
Thank you for the link. If any of them ate the weights, it sounds like I will know soon, and can probably assume that it was recent and that we've ingested very little. I called a nurse and I will be taking my 8-year-old daughter in on Monday for blood testing, just to be sure. I'll call our...
Long story short, I have 10 hens and two small lead weights are missing, presumably eaten. They are the little round fishing kind, slightly smaller than a pea, that clamp onto the line. I know that they fell into the coop. I have no idea which of the girls ate them. Does anyone have any...
She's beautiful. FYI for dog owners: Patricia McConnell talked about a study done about supposed dog "guilt". The look they give is simply because they pick up on our reactions to finding or witnessing the dirty deed.
I used Seven dust for mites and it worked very well. I think I did two applications, maybe a week apart. I put it in the end of a stocking and patted it all over them at night, when they were on the roost. I don't know anything about ivermectin on chickens, so someone else will have to answer...
We just found out that we have rats and have started a serious control plan. I'm pretty sure they haven't been around too long, because now that they're here, they're a total pain.
I've been finding rat droppings in the nest boxes, and assume that the eggs are not fit to eat. There have...
I have one, but we made it with a motor manufactured in the United States. You get a list of instructions on how to adapt it to your coop. You hook it up to a timer and it works very, very well. We love it! The motor cost me around $100 and we used our existing guillotine door...it just has...
I did a search on Healthy Chicks and More hatchery, but the words are too general to get the BYC search results I need. Has anyone ordered from them and were you happy with your order? Thanks!
I've used the deep litter method. Actually, I'm using it right now in the run. It's very dry in the run right now, so it works. I also put bags of grass clippings in there for them to eat and rummage through, which gets scratched in and eventually turns to bedding. I plan to remove it all in...
I think it's just "one of those things." I look at it this way...it's their body's way of managing stress.
Also, our hens are not used to this sudden heat wave. We've had a very cold May and June and 90's all of a sudden is hard on everyone. I assume that once they adjust to the heat a...
They very individually, I've heard. Also, I think Sand Hill Preservation had info on the different Polish breeds (of their strains, anyway) laying different amounts. I think.
Check this link...it has info on "grafting" chicks to a broody hen. http://www.themodernhomestead.us/article/Broody-Hens-1.html
If you know she's a decent broody (stays broody for quite a few weeks, or has successfully brooded before) it may be easier. But you always run the risk of the...
