Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

Have you seen the chicken sling chairs on this thread? There are good pictures on post 5, 11-14 and many others. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/versions-of-chick-chairs-please.1166308/

I think the dressing I was thinking of is called duoderm or hydrocolloid dressing. There are different branda and can be trimmed. They are thicker than Tegaderm, and sometimes tincture of benzoin is used to help them stick well. We used them in the hospitals to protect skin in stoma care as well...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

I hope that Matilda can learn to walk around on her soon to be healed stumps. Eventually, they may toughen up. Padding or medical dressings can be helpful until that happens. I am trying my best to recall a product we used on kids and babies to protect their faces when tape was used. It is...

Usually, frostbitten toes will self amputate. It takes time for this to occur, but most chickens survive. It helps to either soak the feet or use a disinfectant such as Betadine or chlorhexidene on them if soaking is not done.

I cannot locate the exact thread this picture came from, but the chicken suffered frostbite of a lot of tissue on the feet, and had a lot of damage, but it shows some healthy tissue as well. I remember posting on that thread, but could only locate the picture. Glad that everything is going well...

Sorry I have missed a few direct questions and all these posts because of the time difference. Yes, metal in freezing weather can be a good place to get frostbite. I use a couple of metal garbage cans in my coop, and I have caught a hen trying to roost there a few times. My wire crate, I keep...

I would soak her stump and foot in warm water with some Epsom salt, Hibiclens/chlorhexidene, or betadine to keep them clean once a day. Then keep it clean. The Vetericyn or triple antibiotic are fine. I have seen another case online where parts of the foot were pink and healthy and others black...

You could try to crush the tablet into 10ml of water to make a suspension of 50 mg per ml, or in 5 ml of water to make 100 mg per ml. I am not sure that cephalexin is soluble in water, but it is possible to put it in thin yogurt and mix it well.

Cephalexin dosage for chickens is 35 to 50 mg per Kg given 4 times a day. A Kg is 2.2 pounds. Do you know how much she weighs? Here is a link for chickens slings: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/versions-of-chick-chairs-please.1166308/

So sorry about Matilda the Marans. I am fairly sure that she will eventually lose all of her left foot up to the spur. The right foot, may be lost as well, but the red could be a sign of some blood circulation under the skin. I had an RIR hen with spurs once. She is definitely going to be...
