I need to take pix of my pencilled younuns... my guess on the most marked one being a Tom is correct and think I have 2 more pencilled Toms to be. I am pretty sure I have 2 bourbon toms to be as well. I got a few good gobbles out of them but half were piled up in the back area on the roost so...
I have my 6 older bourbons and 6 new bourbons from Porters and 8 pencilled blue palm from Porters as well.
Lots of variety in the palms from almost all white to very variegated!
She will run out into the pen, lay her egg, then turn around and eat it.... I can’t tell which hen it is since about 3 look exactly the same, lol. If I catch her doing it again she may go into a dog kennel and see if my egg production goes up again.
So what should I do about an egg eating hen? Sell/eat I assume is the best course of action. I saw a hen drop an egg in the run and then turn around and eat it... there’s already fake eggs in the nest box and they have free choice oyster shell and 20% protein feed plus black soldier...
One of my poults hatched with a missing outer toe... I thought it was just a clumsy poult until was doing a once over on all of them checking navels and whatnot. Odd... I used my crappier backup incubator so wonder if the temps varied too much or if my new hen that started laying has some crappy...
My turkeys are happy! We have a garden bed we want the grass and weeds gone from and so I made an enclosed run over the garden beds and the turkeys were loving all the spring grasses. Taking bets how many days until bare earth, lol.
Have my second poult-hatch currently hatching out, I think 15...
Of these two colors of heritage birds, which is your preferred: blue slate or narragansett? I do have bourbon reds so would possibly play around with colors in the future (as a separate thing)... Just looking for input :)
So wanted to do BBW turkeys but only butchering dates are 9 days before or day before... that’s pushing it I think on either end... possible spoilage or still in rigor. Might have some Christmas turkeys or get completely bumped to a 2020 plan... and due to our insurance and local regulations we...
Thanks... I have people buying them that care about "heritage" vs "commercial" so that's my only concern, lol... people are weirdly particular around here. I'll just slap the pasture raised and non-gmo label on them (which they will be) and they'll probably still sell just fine.
I just called...
So I've been trying to figure out what this hatchery is calling a Broad Breasted Black... they say it's a hybrid. I'm wondering is it a spanish black tom covering broad breasted bronze hens? The poults they show look like spanish black (and if I recall the black is dominant?). Either way...
We've had our share of "fun" weather lately. First freezing rain then about 7-8" of snow on top, stuck around for 2 days and then got 5" of rain in a 48 hour period leading to flash flooding in the area. Thankfully we're at a higher elevation so the flooding didn't directly affect us...
Random...
My younger poult was not very well accepted after all. Did ok for a few days then some hen got too peck happy and removed the back of the head feathers. Will try reintroducing again when she’s closer to their size and healed up. Unfortunate for her she’s related closely to my flock buuut she can...
@duluthralphie I see you’re experienced in mareks? I have a chicken that I think has the ocular strain (picture below). My other birds of the flock were known-vaccinated but no clue about this one (was a hatchery mis-ship).
My concern is: are the turkeys at any risk? They’re on opposite sides...
So the introduced poult took her first steps outside today. She wasn’t entirely thrilled with 40 degrees and wind... one hen did some snood pulling and chased her but no blood was drawn and they stopped so I’ve left them together now. Hope the girls continue to behave. I put in multiple feeders...
They’ve been side by side for at least 2.5 months now. The poult and the rest of the flock, that is.
I have one b of a hen that is the boss and the tom got between her and the poult a few times when she was investigating by running it around in circles (before it was too dark and they all went...
