Those were birch logs!!!! I too make quite a fuss about keeping my feet dry in the winter. Don't put my good socks on until I'm putting my boots on. Having the right gear makes all the difference too, -30c can be comfortable if you're dressed for it :)

The U of S (university of Saskatchewan) puts out some pretty hardy fruit trees, not sure if they have pears but you could google them and see :). I want to get some eventually :).
