Planted my new blueberry bed today!! 10 bushes, 2 Elliot, 4 Chandler, 2 Reka, 2 Pink Lemonade! Also planted my red onions, mulched everybody with compost, tore out the peppers and started on the tomatoes. Covered my ravaged carrots and yelled at the rabbit!
Got all my garlic in today. Started pulling out the pepper plants and the tomatoes. Discovered that the jack rabbit that has taken up residence in the garden has topped all my carrots :rant. Harvested the most delicious raspberries and made raspberry scones for the family, yummmm...
I can totally relate. In going through planning for wild fire danger escape plans my heart would break at the idea of having to leave my chickens behind and lose my beloved garden. So glad it all turned out OK for you, but sorry that next door is not so good!
:thumbsup I am so glad that you managed to weather that storm as well as you did! How are your chickens? I can imagine that it must feel good to be able to get something back to 'normal' after going through something like that.
They may take a little while now to get the trees back in to optimal shape but it can be done. Do you have some willing family, neighbors or friends who could help you tackle the job? My orchard is still pretty young at 8 years now with newer trees planted in 2015 and 2017 so really this years...
My hubby (bless him) filled one dehydrator with 8 trays of grapes for raisins. If anyone out there has info on what to do with them to prevent mold, I would love to know.
I harvested my Red Bartlett and Harris Sweet pears today. So beautiful, this is the third harvest of pears and most have...
Have you tried dehydrating them and then grinding them up into a powder? I mix mine with other types of peppers and it makes a fabulous hot sprinkle for just about everything!
@deepbluesea, good luck my friend! I do not envy you having to go through this. We just had our fire season to deal with over here so if it's not one thing, it's another!! Be safe and raise up your chicken's water if possible so they don't crap in it!!
Talk to you on the other side!!
I take all my hot chiles and sweet peppers that did not get used in canning projects and put them in the dehydrator for a couple of days. Grind them up fine and use them for a hot sprinkle for just about anything! It's called 'Home Grown Hot Stuff' here and we use it ALL the time. I also put...
Here is an interesting link to this plant:

Just another thing to add to the LONG list of possible plants to grow.........:D
We live in a straw bale house, off grid. Our 'air conditioning' is opening the windows at night and closing them in the morning to cool off the house. The house stays about 75degs in the height of the summer which is very comfortable, but we dont have the option of using any filters! One of...
I think I a going to have to try some NZ spinach. @lazygardener, where do you get your seed? Also, have you tried growing Moringa? I am thinking about trying this plant as it is so highly regarded nutritionally.
Harvested another 35lbs or so of tomatoes. Doing diced toms for canning this afternoon and more dilly beans except I have no more 'dilly' so I have to go down into town and get some.
Smoke here is now considered "Dangerous" and I am feeling it. Harsh on the throat and the eyes. Unless you...
My red bartletts are looking like Christmas in August. Beautiful dark red fruits dangling from the green branches. Almost time to harvest. My Gala apples are almost ready too!:wee
