Soooo...idk if it is irony, karma, or what you wanna call it but the day after I posted this my wife was on a bike ride on the island and rode past a dead eastern diamondback on the side of the road. Absolutely insane how the world reminds us of things when we dismiss them.
Still away from the garden, but we did take a bunch of our goodies with us. Fried up a batch of zucchini, okra, and jalapeño poppers while at the beach today. All was delish!
Lived within a few hours of here most of my life and never seen a rattle snake. Copperheads, cottonmouths, yes. I know we have them but ive never crossed em in nearly 40 yrs.
I should have about another 6-8 ready to pick tomorrow. I was trying to hold out until those were ready but i had a couple that were starting to bruise from the first batch. Well either make pizza or pasta this weekend. Well see how they turn out.
93 and humid today…nothing but refilling chickens water and ousters shells for me outside. Did roast up my first small batch of san marzanos for sauce this weekend. Yum!!!
Not a ton going on today, tied up some tomato plants. I have 3 plants that have outgrown their 8 ft stakes. Not sure what to do with them, i don't want to top them because they are still producing. Trying to zig-zag them across to the neighboring stakes but worried I will break a vine in the...
Pulled some more tomatoes, okra and cukes. My cherokee purple pics are below, that vine really ripened over the weekend. The picture shows more of a brighter red than reality, they look more burgundy in person. I know I probably seem like such a chicken noob...but Bigs has given us 4 eggs in...
Fertilized and watered yesterday. Picked a handful of okra and a few tomatoes. Our newly laying girl Big Sass has given us 3 eggs since Thursday. Hopefully her sis starts laying soon. Put some sweet potato slips in a bag yesterday, the ones that were eaten up by something are coming back nicely...
No gardening for me today. Ive had the same issue with squash, plant gets huge, takes up too much garden space, thinks about setting fruit, gets mildew and dies...We tried acorn squash this year bc wife loves it, one of the plants set 2 fruits but by the time they were about the size of a...
Finally was able to get outside to look at the garden/birds. No eggs :( but a nice haul of tomatoes and a few cukes. The okra is about 6-8 pieces/day right now but they look like they will explode over the next few weeks. We always try to harvest early and often with okra, believe it really...
work, work, work...too busy with work today to even walk outside. I plan on going out in about 2 hrs. I believe I have another 6-8 large tomatoes, handful of okra, and possibly a few cukes ready to pluck. Need to go out and check for eggs as well, both Pullets are getting close to POL. Will...
@TJAnonymous - We had an abundance of banana peppers last year and we cut them like you would for pickling but then lightly breaded and fried them (kind of like fried okra). They were really good both the spicy and sweet ones.
@Sally PB - I just walked out to double check my labels and it is labelled Cherokee Purple Heirloom. It has by far the largest tomatoes of the 7-8 vines in my garden. This is my first time growing them as well so I could just as likely have mislabelled plants as you.
I have one Cherokee Purple in the garden, it gave us our first 2 tomatoes of the season, one of which was the largest tomato I've ever harvested. This was about 2 weeks ago when I pulled the 2 off the vine. I have not gotten anymore ripe fruit since then but it still has plenty of inripe...
Thunder, lightning, rain and hail here this afternoon. Looking at my tall tomato plants leaning over their supports hoping they hold on until morning when i can get out and pick and re-tie. Had a pullet pass away out of nowhere this weekend. No clue what happened, seemed completely healthy and...
My wife dried some a few yrs ago and i believe all she did was hang them upside down from a doorway or a window sill for a while. They have lasted atleast 6-7 yrs.
Pickings from the last 2 days, the carrots are supposed to be of the "baby" variety...they are extremely sweet. Also missing from the photo are 2 large ripe tomatoes (bc they are already in my belly ) The clusters of green tomatoes fell off the vine so I guess we will be having fried...
Thanks, it has been a while. We lost our chicks last fall to a racoon massacre and between moving our garden beds to better locations this spring and building a new run (much more secure). It has been a very busy year.
Moving the beds has been a great decision, everything is growing much...
