using a contraceptive implant (made for dogs) to stop crowing...Anyone ever heard of this?

Hi all, I was wrong about his tail feathers. He looks very much like a regular rooster now with a nice huge tail. His crowing is almost non-existent, the past week I've only heard him crow once and it was because one of the sheds got accidentally locked in the shed (we use to leave the door...

using a contraceptive implant (made for dogs) to stop crowing...Anyone ever heard of this?

The vet believes he is around 6 months old but we aren't certain. You may be right because he never had any bald patches or anything, it's only his tail feathers that seem to have fallen off so maybe it is the implant. I managed to find a better photo of his body today Yes also found that it...

using a contraceptive implant (made for dogs) to stop crowing...Anyone ever heard of this?

Yes I believe so, I've been finding a lot of dark long pointed feathers around the enclosure and I'm sure they are his as he's my only dark coloured "normal feathered" (not silkie) chicken. I'm not sure if the feathers in his now round tail are the regrowth or if that's just how his tail looks...

using a contraceptive implant (made for dogs) to stop crowing...Anyone ever heard of this?

An update on Maya, it has been around 1 month since he was given the implant. When he initially got the implant he crowed a lot more the next few days and was very moody for about a week. I communicate regularly with the vet who administered his implant and she said the implant will initially...

I am unsure but I can ask the avian vet when we bring him back for a health check

using a contraceptive implant (made for dogs) to stop crowing...Anyone ever heard of this?

Yes I believe so. The vet said that there may be changes to his appearance as he's currently molting and may not regrow his saddle feathers. He is likely also to going to be disinterested in mounting my girls. Not a bad thing for me because I don't want chicks and I definitely don't want him...

using a contraceptive implant (made for dogs) to stop crowing...Anyone ever heard of this?

Yes the vet agrees that he is fairly young so the implant is more likely to be successful. He stops crowing completely at around 12pm so the vet believes that he may still do his half crows in the morning out of habit but if the implant is successful, it will stop him from getting the urge to...

using a contraceptive implant (made for dogs) to stop crowing...Anyone ever heard of this?

He has no spurs yet, here is a photo of his body. I also posted a thread last weekend about him when I wasn't sure whether he was male or female :) https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/australorp-isa-brown-and-silkies-boys-or-girls.1279451/

using a contraceptive implant (made for dogs) to stop crowing...Anyone ever heard of this?

We were told by the seller 7 months but the vet believes he is between 4-5months. He seemed moody today, the vet said it may be a side effect because of the hormone therapy, but not aggressive. Just restless. I watched him with my silkies again today and he didn't seem to want to chase them or...

using a contraceptive implant (made for dogs) to stop crowing...Anyone ever heard of this?

Hi all, I was recommended the implant by a bantam breeder who says she has had a lot of success with the implant with her cockerels. My Australorp x cockerel, Maya, was administered implant today, with a 4.7mg dose. In total, I forked out $280 (AUD), $110 for the consultation fee on a Sunday...
