Hmm... my Underwoods started laying at 26 weeks and I had chicks in the ground before they were 30 weeks old. That said, it was fall/winter, so temps were cool. I never hatch after April. It's a waste of time because it throws off POL and makes for slower growth rates. So I agree, it could...

I think I shared these once before, but thought I'd share another blast from the past. My great grand father bred and showed RC RIR in the first half of the 20th century until the late 40s. He had a large poultry house next door to his house in IL. His name was CF Haffey (Carl Frederick)...

I have rose comb Underwood just an hour north of Chattanooga. I have 100-150 chicks on the ground from 4 different breeding pen trios but won't be parting with any until at least July. (June 9th shoulder surgery will prevent me from going thru birds until then). They should begin laying at...

Rose comb is actually dominant over single comb. So a RC can be a SC carrier, but not visa versa. If you're into punnett squares, Rose Comb is is either RR or Rr, single comb is rr. I have all RC except one SC pullet who I have used for 2 years now due to her superior type. Because...

I'm in East TN and travel frequently to the Carolinas and GA. But I no longer ship eggs (too much of a hassle since I'm 30 minutes to the closest post office). I sell started pullets and cockerels beginning mid summer and through the fall each year.

Guess I should have kept reading the posts after the one I quoted. Lol

Sorry, Ideal is a hatchery that sells hatchery birds. They should make great layers though.

Ok... here's a weird question. I've hatched chicks for years and never really had this happen... I have 4 breeding pens of trios. I've finished hatching for the year and have 4 general age groups that I haven't combined yet. One group is about 4-7 weeks old and is simply spastic. They are...

I've hatched a few hundred out of 4 trios. I have Underwood birds. I don't sell chicks but will begin parting with pullets and cockerels in July or so.

I've never had a RIR not honor the electronetting. Periodically I'll get a smarty pants rhodebar who thinks that going over is fun game. I put the rebel a,few times. If he/she keeps going over they go in the freezer. Because I use maremma I don't have to ever worry about predation "in the...

Mine span a 60 day period. The trick is to combine them as young as possible and to make sure they are away from the hens and pullets. If they are less than 4 or 5 months old and get combined in groups, instead of one at a time added, they will not fight. If you add only one or two to a...

I breed 4 pens each winter of RC RIR, but have double that in cockerel pens. So basically 8 pens specifically for cocks, 4 of which double as breeding pens in Jan and Feb. I have 3 large coops where all the hens stay each winter. Then they all co-mingle and rotate all summer. That doesn't...

We have a difference of wording I believe. Standard bred RIR are those bred to the SOP - Standard of Perfection. What makes a breed, any breed, heritage is the origin of that "breed", not the origin of that bird. RIR are a heritage breed, but Standard Bred RIR cam only be obtained from...

Several noticeable problems have been discussed so I won't rehash. But I'll add another thing that jumped out to me was the lack of horn color on the beak and legs.

RIR are a heritage breed. I believe the question you meant to ask was, "are these standard bred?" ;-)

I guess that depends on the number of birds you have. I only have 300-400 at peak each year and loosing more than one a year (who was older than just hatched) would really worry me. But I'm anal and want an explanation for everything. ;-)

What I found immediately interesting about this post was that my Kubota manual is next to my SOP also. Not sure what that says about us... let's hope your fuel line filter wasn't leaking also (at least it was an easy fix). ;-)

Oh, we have a genie and battery bank, we simply didn't have the switch box wired yet. ;-) You can bet that'll move up the priority list once we thaw out. But hauling hundreds of gallons of water to the large livestock and keeping it thawed was a much higher priority than saving 45 eggs.

Only the best 8 hens make it to the four breeding pens each year. I do ship eggs each spring but am not going to take any orders I haven't already received after the losses I've experienced this week. We've had no power or water since Monday, so I've lost an entire incubator of eggs. The...
