@pathornton, He's not bad in color but he looks to be light in primary and maybe secondary wing feather color. Also he need more depth of color. His type is a little off for the breed. - Tail angle should be higher and less horizontal. - Back looks a little short for the breed. - Wings should...

It's not impossible. The Rhode Island Red has a feather footed breed in its heritage so it's not surprising to get stubs now and then.

Ya the black in the neck or ''collars''. You are right when you start stirring the pot any thing will pop up. When that black starts showing up you can also start getting black in the wing bow and in the breast.

In the neck there is a lot of lacing, that lacing will give you a ton of head aches down the road when working on color.

Now a little test for you, lol Do you know the reason why I said not to use them in the breading pen? *Hint it has nothing to do with type.

The reason I ask is, if trying to improve the line then those three birds should not be used in a breeding pen. They will cause a ton of head aches down the line.

Irishhenman There should be red on the front of the legs, here is a picture of Pine Grove's Red Hens and they show great shank color. [Not My Bird] As for the red in your birds tail, it might be the picture because even when the photo is enlarged it looks to be there. I hope you dont...

Irishhenman; I don't know the UK standard on Red's but I can go by the APA Standard and like before it is real hard to judge a bird by a photo. You have a nice Red, he looks to have good neck, head and eyes nice beak coloring and good yellow legs. The black in his tail looks good though he looks...

First let me say I am not directing this to anyone on here but I am stating a fact so that others that are not familiar will understand. The Rhode Island Red and the Rhode Island White are two completely different breeds, they are not two varieties of the same breed. The Red and the White have...

Here is what Kaufmann & Windheim thought about smut back in 1911. Under Color Last of all but most important, under color. It must be red as the day of smut has passed. Many breeders think smut helps to get the rich surface color but they are sadly mistaken. Smut will help you to get a dirty...
