Thank you RoseMarie. My avatar picture of the Orpington (black & white) is my rooster, Huckleberry. He's a sweetie just like my girl, Shirley (she is solid black). The bantam roosters are all game roosters except one & he is a Red Jungle Fowl.

Thank you for Bob Blosl's website. I visited it & got lost in reading some of the information. I bookmarked it for later reading also.

My sister tells me not to name the females, only the males. She named her male bird but not her hens. I remember you talking about Patty. I love that! I have one Orpington that is like that with me. We had a small flock of bantam roosters that free ranged & that whole flock would run to me...

Very good advice, Fred. Thank you. Your zeal for this breed is definitely evident in your conversation & commitment.

Thank you. I am just now understanding the main traits for the grown birds. I will have to do some reading about the traits to look for in the chicks. I refer back to this site often to read & re-read: http://jimspetsandpoultry.weebly.com The site was posted on this thread & it has been...

Thank you. Yes, I knew in my heart the high tail excuse was just that, & hopeful thinking. But, it is what it is so now we just have to deal with it.

Yes, indeed. Congratulations to Matt & to you, cmom. We are hoping to sell 4 males soon. Two RIRs, one EE & one Ameraucana. If it turns out that we have an over abundance of Crested Polish, those will go too. I think we only have one male in that flock but a couple are iffy. Those are...

As retirement nears, we have nothing but time & we enjoy working with these birds. I put a band on the male we are going to keep. I'm just not sure about keeping either one of the others. Both hold their tails really high. I had hoped it was just something they did when they were on alert...

Thank you, cmom. That is the male I had thought we should keep. He still leaves a lot to be desired but he is our "keeper". You have some beautiful birds.

Thank you, Fred, for your input on these birds. I had an idea about the males but was disappointed to hear that the pullets aren't better. As you say, we will have to use them since they are all we have & just keep trying for better ones.

These are my husband's birds. They will be a year old around the 20th of June. The pullets started laying in January & are averaging an egg a day. We only have 2 pullets so the black bird you see in one of the pictures is an Orpington. I added an extra picture of one of them in the sunlight...

It actually wasn't as bad as they thought it would be. We did get some ice though. It's still on the trees & grass but the roads were clear this afternoon. The roads may freeze in places again tonight since there is a strong wind blowing & it is a really cold wind. We live in a hilly, rural...

Matt, I was so looking forward to meeting you, seeing your birds & experiencing the poultry show. If the weather forecast changes for the better, maybe we can still make it. Right now, the predictions are for rain, snow, possible ice & strong winds on Friday. They don't seem to be certain on...

I so want to go to these poultry shows. The FL one is a bit far. It's a little over 11 hours for me, one way. The GA one isn't quite as long. All my planning for this one in MS this weekend may be for naught since the weather predictions don't look to be in our favor. I'm still watching...

cmom are you attending any of the upcoming shows? We are planning a trip to the Columbia, MS show this weekend, weather permitting. Snow is predicted for Friday but don't know how much. May be just be flurries. I was so excited about going to that show too. I'm hoping the weather prediction...

I've visited that site a couple of times. I need to visit it more often. I don't always remember everything I read. One of the gifts of years, I think. Thank you for sharing it again though. I truly do need to spend more time there.

No but those are pretty birds. The rooster & hens look different from my husband's birds in a few ways & I'm wondering if that is because the birds shown at this site are the Underwood line. I don't know enough about the difference (or not any difference) in the Underwood, Reese, etc..

Hi & welcome! I am fairly new here myself. I think you will like the RIRs. They are so pretty. We don't have many but we have a start. Good luck with yours.

Yes, that is pretty much what my husband's RIRs legs look like. Thank you for the picture. Your incubation arrangement is awesome! I saw where you posted a site about the styrofoam incubators. I will be looking that over shortly. My cousin has Buff Orpingtons. I have Black Orpington pullets...
