the Marans should have light gray legs and feet. the rock will have yellow. Also if you are lucky the marans should have feathers on their leggs and outer toe; no feathers on the leggs of the rocks.
excellent question, I don't know for sure. I assume that when I see a fully developed chick that has not broken into the air cell (which for these postmortems is usually very small) that it was drowned.
So I am incubating my first Goose eggs and was interested to read that the reason they are sprinkled with water each day is to help the membrane become more permeable so that they eggs lose moister faster. I wonder if this would work with Marans? I have lost 40% to drowning the last few...
THe good news is shank feathering is great! A few without feathers to the end of the toe but most have good outer toe feathers. I may start selecting for longer toes next year. THanks for confirming choosing for size was the right thing!
thanks Wynette!
I am very curious what folks cull for and when. I just culled some 8wk old cockerels. I culled for body size and head size.... keeping the cockerels with the largest bodies and heads.
I am mostly interested in those early cull choices, if any? I am a small time keeper of chickens, willing...
Not Wynette here, but will say that it is hard to tell a pinched tail unless you are looking,,, uhhem... up her skirt,.... as it were! A view from the back would show you a pinched tail.... if it is there.

Pink, good to know.... I won't try to use it as a method for determining sex!
I have, however, found that after using a male with middle toe feather I have greatly improved leg and outer toe feather on my females. I wounder if this will end up being a variable that is never stable? What do...
Here are the 3 that have been raise in my neighbors cow barn. They are 4wks old. Looking at them now I wonder if I have just one cockerel and two "manly" pullets. These guys have been spoiled being feed cow milk and wet cat food as well as silage, and chick feed!
Maryhysong, thanks for your reply!
I am actually only interested in a Cockerels from these chicks.... to replace a backup rooster I lost to a weasel. I know, from experiance, that at 4 wks I can tell the boys from the girls, (already have homes for any pullets in this hatch). What I need to...
So I am raising up some Marans chicks and want to cull soon for size. At what age do you all cull chicks for getting the largest Adult birds? Does Chick size correspond closely to Adult size? Right now, at 2wks old, the chicks that came from the larger eggs are still larger than the ones that...
I got babies! so far four blue, one splash and, 5 black copper Marans. 3 more drying off and, one zipping. plus one Banty mutt, that belongs to my son!
