Yes Purple hens get purple on the back of their necks. But this guy is certainly a cock bird. If it was a hen the markings would look more like this non-purple BS hen. Yours has the tan markings that run through the black which is a better indicator of a cock BS like the second pic.

I wouldn't be picking out male names just yet. It shows more hen traits than cock at this point.

There is no way of telling sex, you would have to do a DNA test. Black Shoulder is all you can say for certain and Purple is starting to show, but judging from the white secondaries and white on the end of the tail there will be some type of white gene, possibly Dark Pied or maybe WE. Way too...

By the look of the white feathers on the wings it is carrying a white gene of some type.
