Mine were outside at 5 days with a heat plate this Spring. Night time temps got down to 31. They were in a raised brooder with fluffy shavings to trap the warmth.
My older birds learned about corn on the cob from the younger birds. I scraped a couple kernels while holding the cob and once the little kids got those first few nibbles they went nuts. After they got used to biting the kernels off I didn't need to hold the cob anymore. Then the older birds...
I'm still working on getting the chicks to try lettuce and kale. Worms too for that matter. If I can trick them into trying a new food (I hide it in my hand with just a tiny bit showing, then they grab it fast before someone else gets it) they generally like it but salad hasn't caught on yet.
Opened the chicken run under the coop this morning before opening the pop door. The big girls walked over to newly opened area like they do every morning to stare longingly at the delicious greenery that has been out of reach. They picked at a few grasses on the edge and then the light bulb...
I gave the kids (4 week olds) a fresh ear of corn and they demolished it amazingly fast. Looked like those old movies of piranha attacking a cow. They also got a big handful of cabbage looper caterpillars which set off a big keep away chase game. Tomorrow I'll remove the fence preventing them...
Is that plastic pipe or aluminum? We might end up making a couple. Oh and I took a bunch of pics of our SFHs, I think I've figured out the pullets from the cockerels. I'll post pics later.

I totally get this. I love giving them interesting things like a tray of fresh soil, or a big clump of sod. I love giving them treats like meal worms or corn on the cob. It's so fun watching them interact with each other and something they think is valuable or just interesting to them. And...
I am the person who said she didn't really want chickens sitting on her.
This is Cleo, sitting on me. She eventually settled in to take a nap. She's about five weeks old and a Speckled Sussex.
