    MJ's little flock

I was just reflecting on my experiences with chicken health and veterinary practice. It always goes like this I notice symptoms and make a guess based on reading and an appointment. At the appointment, my guess is proven wrong. This always happens. I thought Katie was egg bound, then I was...

That is not OK! Staggeringly unprofessional.

Oh thank you Grammy. That's very kind. By the way, is Bob's bathroom all finished now?

    MJ's little flock

There was a black area suspected of being a little piece of zinc. And lots of grains of sand and grit lit up in her crop and lower gut when they should be passing through with the poop. It's all causing irritation and gas. But there were no discernable pieces of hardware like screws or nails or...

I've picked out one of her baby photos to share. It's from her quail phase 🥰

    MJ's little flock

It makes sense that if her digestive system was almost in stasis, no wonder she had a pile up of spirochaetes. I assume in a normal digestive system, the bacteria would move on through and out the other end.

    MJ's little flock

Yes, it seems it was ingested. Maybe a little piece of zinc has sat in her crop for a while, inducing statis. It could be the little bumpy thing the vet noticed when I took her in this morning. The vet said almost all suburban homes have little pieces of zinc here and there from when they were...

    MJ's little flock

Yes, a huge relief! And it seems the other hens are not experiencing toxicity, so that's good! But it's something I need to be looking out for now I know it's in their environment.

    MJ's little flock

I'm home again and Katie's in hospital for a few days. She has either zinc or lead toxicity, but the images indicate zinc. She's having chelation therapy for five days with crop feeds, hard food, and IV liquids because her kidneys are not functioning very well. The chelation therapy is...

They've called to say she's awake and we'll discuss findings when I arrive to collect her at 4.

    MJ's little flock

I've just checked the dates and she's lost 400g in 10 days. That's a lot and fast.

And now I've terrified myself by reading about leukosis in the dvm and realising the symptoms are a perfect fit 😰 Still hoping it's digestive blockage :fl

    MJ's little flock

I didn't mention earlier because I was interrupted by the vet nurse and signing consents, but there's also something weird in her crop. A bumpy thing. So hopefully it'll show up on the images.

    MJ's little flock

She's staying with the vet today for images and bloods and I'll pick her up around 4. That involves anaesthetic because no bird stands still for her xrays. She's lost 400g since her last appointment which was only a couple of weeks ago. Hoping there are no signs of leukosis or Marek's :fl...

    MJ's little flock

We've arrived early at the vet. I seem incapable of estimating the duration of the drive. I can hear Katie flicking her head with her wattles in the basket. I haven't said much but I'm quite worried about her. Chickens are such lovable little ones.

    MJ's little flock

Thanks for telling me! I had heard of this type of mosquito control but wasn't sure about where the standing water is. It could be the neighbour's pond? Or the wetlands? Anyway it's a bit hit and miss in a suburban setting. But I will follow up further.

    MJ's little flock

Katie's appointment is 9am Saturday morning. She's not improving and perhaps declining a little. Hopefully we can get to the main cause soon. In the meanwhile here's Peggy keeping watch over her friends.
