It can happen with first time mothers, especially if they haven't been broody raised themselves and have never seen a chick before. Seen, as in been able to see and be near another hen caring for chicks.
As far as I know the animals are okay. A perplexing note is that a horse was in a different pen/stall than where he was supposed to be, the walls were too high for him to jump them. They are assuming that he was picked up by the tornado and set down in that pen/stall. The horse seems fine.

My brother is four miles from us, but the tornado passed a quarter of a mile south of us. A sister and her husbands place is a mess. One wall of the house is gone, all the barns are flattened, the roof of the garage is gone and the two corn silos are flattened as well.
We got a tornado warning that recommended we go into the basement if we have one, instead we took the truck and decided to get out of there! While out we saw the tornado moving across the community.
