  1. Owls 🦉 How to Deter

    Owls 🦉 How to Deter

We've lived in Arizona for 30 years. In 2012 our friend and neighbor Lou passed. He would put rocks up on the top columns of his patio for doves to nest. Doves are horrible nest builders and often their eggs roll out of their flimsy built nest. The neighbor who bought his home had no interest...
  2. Teflon Poisoning in Birds

    Teflon Poisoning in Birds

Yes, Teflon, or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), can be dangerous to birds. When heated to 530° F (280° Celsius) or higher, PTFE-coated non-stick cookware and other products release a clear, odorless gas that is toxic to birds. Birds are more susceptible to PTFE poisoning because they have a...

Setting Up Perfect DIY Temp Control System for $45

Setting up a perfect DIY brooder temperature control system on a budget. #1. Most common is using distance between the brooder and the light. #2. Is using a dimmer to control the brooders temperature. #3. Is using a temperature controller. #1 & #2 are the most common. I started with #1 in...

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

Final update... Chick lived 6 days. It was a fighter. Always heard late hatch chick usually don't make it. Strange it ate until it's death (liquid diet). Day 3 it got to 7 grams. Day 5 lost it's gains. This morning was struggling to live. I stayed with it until it's death. Buried him in...

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

Oh well 🙁 trouble in paradise. He was doing fine in encubator yesterday his first day. Eating crumble and watermelon for moisture. Had 2 dark green runny poops but from what I read on BYC that's not unusual for first 2 days. First time for us though. In past all quail chicks we hatched had...

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

Update for ALL 😊 On day 25 today the chick hatched. We've been doing this for 30 years usually Gamble quails hatch on day 22 to day 23. He's (could be a she. I can't tell) the smallest We've seen in our lifetime. Seems healthy & alert enough. We'll raise out few days make sure it's going to...

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

🤣 LOL the "Quail Lady" cautioned us that if you release in groups of 3 or less probability of survival is 1% but large groups it's good. So what we do if we get a quail that abandons after laying 2 to 3 eggs we still hatch but but take to the Wildlife Center. They group them by size and then...

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

Gamble Quail - hatch for Wildlife Rescue ... When hen abandons nest on our property they taught us (actually an urban legend in Phoenix called the "Quail Lady") how to release after a 5 week brooding period. We built the release cages and everything to her specs... We have around 144 Gambels...

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

Just Googled my question "Most paper towels are made with two harsh chemicals: chlorine and formaldehyde. The chlorine is commonly used to to make the paper towel white in color. The by-products of using Chlorine for bleaching are toxins such as dioxin and furans, which are known to be dangerous...

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

I like this idea. Concerned with quail that their feet might go through the grating on bottom of the incubator and break their legs. If they hatch at night it might be hours before we are aware, however we do have a baby monitor on the incubator so we can hear if they cheep after hatching.

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

Many years ago we had an owl killed the mom dove & the male abandoned the nest. We picked up the encubation to carry the eggs thru hatching. The first chick to hatch somehow managed to turn over the water source for the humidity in the incubator wetting the cloth material that the unmatched...

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

That's what we used in the past as well except this time they stuck to the eggs. I checked and humidity 70% and temperature 100 degrees F. I have an independent calibrated thermometer & humidity gauge that verifies incubater readings. Gambels supposed to be kept at 65% to 75% on lock down to...

Any issues w/using paper towels after lockdown?

I want to post a question... I'm trying to find out if anyone has had an issue with using paper towel in encubator at lock down. I've hatched quail eggs off & on for years. Lock down on day 18. It's now day 23 and was concerned chick hadn't started its pip yet. When tried to pick up egg it...

Day 23, No pips, still moving around when I candled

So sorry 😞 for your loss. I read the thread and once I was given the advice on how to tell if they are alive via warm water test. We had one that moved like a motor boat and the other we thought was dead. Instead of removing him we continued to encubate and on hatch day he popped out and was...

    candling quail eggs and incubation?

Be careful with most of tests you read about. I did warm water test once and thought the chick was dead. Egg was immobile until hatch day. Chick popped out and didn't even pip. Same on candling. So unless we see no activity in egg, i.e., clear after about 7 to 9 days I'd continue to encubate...
