This is a bizarre goose whose sibling died so he decided I was his mate - I had to get him another quickly because he was obsessed with me and would make a ruckus on the deck until I came out or he'd spend the day staring through the glass door trying to talk to me and then follow me all over...
My gander is very friendly and quirky but he's now sitting on and protecting eggs. His mate doesn't seem broody. Is this a thing that ganders do sometimes?
Thanks. I did sell the extra cockerels from my first batch for $30 each and all sold within the month. Most people here give roos away for free, of any breed. I think I will try day-old chicks $40/ea.
I have 3 babies that just hatched. I'm keeping the first dozen but I'm wondering what to charge per chick after that? The parents are not SOP ie the roosters' combs are not perfect. But lots of people in my area want pet-quality for their flocks anyways. I see prices all over from $30-100/chick?
Chickens are pretty gross to process if you've never done it. You could bring him to a butcher if you want to eat him. Or you could give him away (like on a FB group) - I've done this.
Sorry for your loss. PP gave good advice. I had luck crushing 50mg of Ibuprofen and sprinkling a bit of that in my duck's water AM and PM after a mink attack. She was badly injured and I'm shocked but she survived.
Thx. :) My husband always cleans the coop and litterboxes just in case (this is my 4th pregnancy; I do the horse stalls bc they're not as skanky) but I'll have to change the timing of my order then because they were arriving 2/1 and we were going to brood them in the laundry room like usual. I...
Is there anything to be aware of here? I've ordered chicks from online hatcheries before but I placed my order and now I'm pregnant. Besides the obvious like salmonella and washing my hands, are there any other birdborne illnesses I need to worry about?
Merry Christmas! Pirate is still alive and she's perky. I put her in with the rabbit does (they're bizarrely friendly and tiny, Netherland Dwarves) and they were all 3 laying together under the heat lamp. She seems happier in a bigger space so hopefully she's eating.
I have Cemanis and I gifted my friend 18 eggs but only 3 chicks hatched out. Will be incubating ourselves in spring. I bought for $30/chick in VT. I sold the excess roos for the same.
Are these breeds friendly if handled a lot as chicks? We have Ayam Cemanis currently (our Crevecoeurs were killed by a mink) and they are beautiful but very flighty and not interested in attention as per their nature. We just ordered the above breeds to arrive in early February but I can still...
The children have named this duck Pirate. I hope she's taking little nibbles of food. She's perky and her wounds and neck look great. I'm shocked her neck was able to heal from the state it was in the first day. Her poop ranges from mint to hunter green- what does that indicate?
I have main housing already but I want to make a small/secure/separate space for the disabled so they don't get attacked by the others.
I'm looking at the Snap Lock coop with the Producer's Pride Pen - but the pen looks like the gaps are huge? We had a recent mink attack here so I'm not seeing...
She's not twitching today. I did not tube feed her last night or today. She's terrified of me now since I tube fed her so she won't drink while I'm holding a bowl for her anymore. She has wet mash and water of course- whether she's nibbling at it is anyone's guess. The injuries are healing. So...
