Eh. I had to take a single chick from a pair of broodys (they only had one between 7 eggs, and were happy to raise it together) because of a fox problem. The chick cried for a day or so, then made friends with one of the eleven incubator chicks I had, and that was that. As for the moms, they...
they can be bred to have a slow feathering dad and fast feathering mom, and if the slow feathering is on the boy gene, then only roosters will be slow feathering. most birds aren't bred to be determined by feather speed.
dude, that's unfortunate, but it's just what happens sometimes. I would offer electrolytes or chick vitamins, but I once lost 4/6 I got at a feed store.
I have a very pretty Rhode Island Red, but he's a bit more aggressive to the hens than I would like. I also have three Pekin ducks, and my mom says she's going to eat them if they aren't sold. the ducks are two drakes and one hen (I think). I live in Licking County Ohio.
it just depends on the breed and temperment. I had a Rhode Island Red and an Australorp, they were in the same nest, and they accidently crushed most of their eggs. they ended up with one chick, and they shared it nicely, with one hen showing it how to be a chicken, and the other chasing away...
once they are of similar size, just toss 'em in. they'll probably get pecked at a little, but the kids will have safety in numbers, and the elders will be experienced enough to hold their own in a fight, if the chicks turn out to be the aggressors.
:( sorry to hear that. I got an incubator off Amazon for $60, it always has between 50 and 60% hatching rate, but at least it's been reliable so far.... knock on wood lol
The cat in my picture is Thomas.
I also have an elderly tabby named Abraham, a black cat with white chest spots called Midnight (MIDI for short ), and a little calico named Autumn.
Nah, I was in the house most of the day. The strange thing is, I’m a fan of rock music, and happened to be listening to Pay The Man by The Offspring. Not 30 seconds after the table falls, and:
“See the way the wind blows……”
