    Changes for winter

The patio is covered and is about 8 ft x 10 ft. They LOVE to hang out there during the day! That same area is the cats door so we already shovel out from that area for him to go out and go to the bathroom in the yard (he also dislikes snow but also hates a litter box 😂) They also like to come...

    Changes for winter

Oh! Here I was worried about nothing then? Sounds just like me. They free range all day but I was looking at a small kiddie pool for a dust bathing area under the covered patio space and maybe even a second one with straw since they really like to sleep there during the day. They seem to dislike...

    Changes for winter

I’m starting to get concerned about our coop now that the hens are getting older and winter will be on the way. I didn’t know what I was doing or where to look before we built. We took part of the shed for the ladies. We are zone 6. So it gets cold but not ridiculously cold. We rarely get...

    Indoor vs outdoor feeder

Here’s our feeder set up. It helps prevent waste and Kees the dogs from eating what the ladies throw out. The border collie / aussie thinks she’s a chicken and loves to hang out with the ladies. She even likes to scavenge the yard for their treat (BSFL). She’s still learning that she...

    Indoor vs outdoor feeder

We are free ranging the chickens, both dogs and the cat! 😂 only the cat could get in the coop if he wanted but he doesn’t. There’s a human door that I keep latched except when I go in and the automatic coop door the chickens go in and out of. Their coop is a portion of the shed and is off the...

    Indoor vs outdoor feeder

I was hoping that might be ok! We have a pretty small coop. They really just sleep there 😂 even though there’s space for other activities. The dog is a border collie; about 11 months old. She only weighs about 35# but I don’t think we have a spot we could do that in. I did think about that...

    Indoor vs outdoor feeder

We have a 10# feeder under shelter outside but I’m unable to keep the dog from eating it with them (she thinks she’s a chicken 😂 I throw out treats for them and scoures the yard with them too!) the chicken feed gives her terrible diarrhea 😔 our chickens rarely go in the coop unless it’s bedtime...

    Feather picking?

Scratch and Peck now makes a grower crumble! We got that in and they eat quite a bit more 😂 they were def picking through the other feed. Everyone who had lost feathers are regrowing them now as well. No fighting or pecking going on. They’re all getting along pretty darn well! Thanks for all the...

    Feather picking?

This I did not know! Thanks for sharing! Maybe they do eat more than I think though? Their feeder is a 10# feeder and they eat about half of that a week between the 7 of them. I still have about 60# of this food as I over bought 😂 they ate 5# of a cheaper food in 2 days before I got this one...

    Feather picking?

I am currently feeding soy free, yes. We’re using a scratch and Peck brand grower feed.

    Feather picking?

Thank you for that! I will try again. They weren’t fans of that before 😂

    Feather picking?

I appreciate this! I don’t want to feed soy so I will try to cut down on treats. I just love that they get so excited and follow me around 🥰

    Feather picking?

It’s actually grower feed. They still need more protein than that? Oh gosh. Ok! I do feed a good amount of meal worms / black soldier fly larvae they honestly don’t eat a lot of their food. They mostly forage the yard.

    Feather picking?

We’re in Spokane, WA! We have 12-22 week old hens. I have checked for external parasites multiple times and never find anything. Which is good! I am beginning to think it’s juvenile molting. I’ve been watching them more closing and am not really seeing any behavior causing it. Thank you!!

    Feather picking?

I did just find this information though: Generally complete moulting occurs from 1-6 weeks and partial moulting at 7-9 weeks, 12-16 weeks and 20-22 weeks, and during this latter moult the stiff tail feathers are grown. Maybe I was using the wrong search terms and most of it is molt with some...
