Both are pullets. With this type of coloring, males will grow dark feathers on their breasts, rather than the salmon color that the pullets have.
Here’s a thread with an 8 week old Welsummer cockerel for reference...
All 3 today, though Juillet’s was a bit of a surprise. She was last to lay, and didn’t do so until we were all out foraging. She just stopped in the middle of bug-hunting (out in the open, I might add), strained a bit and then dropped her egg right by my foot. She gave it one good nuzzle to show...
2 today, from Juin and Juillet, who had a sort of showdown over the favored corner of the nest box, which I had to intervene in. Juin was literally trying to squeeze herself underneath Juillet, who would then attempt to drag her back out from under her by the comb. I just booted Juillet out and...
What beauties! :love
That’s so neat that you can identify hens of the same age and breed by voice. I always wondered if I’d be able to tell my girls apart if I got more than one of each breed, so I went with all different breeds to be sure.
I recently ordered another Dominique though, and...
All 3 today!
This weekend is supposed to be cool, spring-like weather for a change, and I plan to spend as many daylight hours as possible either with the chickens or in the garden :)
2 today, from Juin and Juillet.
We had big storms last night, and you know what that means… big puddles! They’ve been feasting on worms all day long. I also gave them the bug eaten collard and kale leaves from the garden, so they got their meat and their veggies :)
3 again today!
Juin is going to have laid a month straight soon. I always feel better when they take days off regularly, but I’m grateful nonetheless for all these cute beige eggs :)
I also believe it’s a cockerel. Here is my Blue Cuckoo Marans pullet at the same age, to compare:
Her comb only started turning pink at around 10 weeks old.
I’m thinking those are walnut combs, like you’d find on a Silkie. Walnut would make sense genetically if it was an EE hen crossed with a rooster that had a rose comb, but I’m assuming that it was the same rooster who sired Fuzzyfoot. His mom was likely a Marans based on the brown speckled egg...
I’m not a pro, but I believe it’s a cockerel. Sapphire Gems/Blue Plymouth Rocks are a sex-linked hybrid, and only males have barring like yours is showing.
