Review by 'DebinCR' in article 'Top 15 Chicken Coop Mistakes'

This covers just about everything! I have to watch out for heat in the tropics, and may add more hardware cloth on the sides for extra ventilation. I do have pretty good shade. One thing I did was use corrugated aluminum buried 8" deep around the base - it doesn't rust. more expensive, but I'll...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Good morning from Costa Rica! Yes, I've been a lurker. Many of the posts don't apply to me as I have different seasons and issues here, but much information has been useful. I've used BYC information on treating illnesses, mites, worms and treat feeding. What I've learned both here and as a...

    Expelled oviduct

I was too shocked to get pictures. The 'egg' inside was tiny, about 1/4". the total length of the oviduct was about 2". There was no blood. I'm guessing she had a genetic problem that caused it to not develop. Sorry about no pictures, I'll try to remember to get the camera if there's a next...

    Expelled oviduct

I looked at a picture of an immature oviduct to determine what it was- there is NO doubt, I could hardly believe it. There was a tiny proto-egg in it . It landed in her poop tray. She is behaving normally, eating well. The color was good, not inflamed or infected in any way. I've never seen...

    Expelled oviduct

I have a young hen who hasn't started laying. She spent a lot of time in nest boxes without results. I figured she was a 'late bloomer'. About a week ago she was acting distressed, so I massaged her, looking for a stuck first egg - nothing. So I injected some coconut oil into her cloaca to...

    Yep, you're enticing them, LOL!!

Cockerel being weird about cracked corn

Some of mine are 'crack' addicts; some won't touch it; some love berries; some love bread; ALL love meat! I put out 3 types of feed since I usually have chicks, too. Fascinating little dinosaurs...

Comment by 'DebinCR' in article 'Nest Boxes 101'

I had a mite problem, since I free-range in a 500s.m. tropical garden and wasn't shutting the coop enough to keep all the wild birds out, especially Inca doves. I dusted my birds (got nailed by the rooster for grabbing him!), and carefully placed food-grade DE all over the coop & rubbed it on...

    Lowest-ranked hen being starved

Yes, I was thinking of getting the ports for buckets. We don't have rats, just some mice now & then, & I put poison pellets in inaccessible places. My main reason for the buckets is to allow us to leave for a couple of days without needing to feed the flock. It's hard to find a 'chicken sitter'...

    Lowest-ranked hen being starved

I want to thank EVERYONE who has replied! I'm using all of the ideas mentioned, with good results. Her comb is becoming red & she's not hunched over. I guess she'll always be the 'bottom' hen, but I can now keep her healthy. She does have a buddy, the 2nd highest hen, so that helps as long as #2...

    Lowest-ranked hen being starved

I'm thinking about getting the plastic rat-proof type that screw into a bucket. The problem is shipping and customs - a $27 purchase has $76 shipping and customs fees!! I have to find a service that will do it cheaper. I'm working on it.

    Lowest-ranked hen being starved

Nothing goes in the feeders but commercial feed. The feeders are not always full - I feed at dawn, bananas at 8am (hugely popular!), corn at noon, lots of feed at 4pm. Plus they hit the compost and are busy scratching throughout the dense garden all day. I'll change line of sight, thank you! The...

    Lowest-ranked hen being starved

I have 9 free-ranging mixed-breed hens with a large rooster and a bantam cockerel, in a big tropical garden (500 square meters, fenced). My coop is 90s.f. Right now there's 8 chicks in 3 small clutches ( 7 weeks, 4 weeks and 2 weeks old ) and 3 hens on eggs due to hatch ( most will be given away...

Review by 'DebinCR' in article 'Common egg quality problems'

Great information! My weirdest eggs were a triple-yolk and a conjoined, giant 'siamese' egg from a new layer!

Review by 'DebinCR' in article 'Accessorizing Your Run- How to Make Your Run More Fun For Your Chickens'

All great ideas! I took the steps idea and instead created a sort of wooden roller coaster out of 1X3 wood, with all sorts of angles & connections. It's a real jungle gym! they get lots of exercise hopping around, especially if I spike it with bits of corn that they search for. I added some...

Hens won't eat any food, cry on and off all day

There's always poison, in food or not, if you can put it in the ground away from the chickens. Not my favorite method at all, but it works. I put it in my toolshed with temptations, well away from the chicks. I like the bar variety, all ready to use.

    Which rooster should be culled?

We had trouble with my rooster attacking my partner. Finally, my partner had enough, made himself large & noisy & carried a stick. Once he got spurred in the face, and that led to total war. My partner won by running him to the bottom of the property after a careful boot-into-the-air after an...
