we use a heated water bowl (made for pets). The peas get a big heated water bucket. Chickens poop in the water and run thru it so it needs to be dumped and refilled every few days (although they surely don't seem to mind drinking the muddy water). Works for us with freezing temps.

8 hens and 2 50# bags per month

although we are very new to chickens, we have only two boxes for 8 hens and they make out just fine.
