Right now I have the opportunity to get some Ayam Ketawas. However, I don't know much about them and haven't found much online.
Have you dealt with this breed? What are your thoughts on them? Their temperament? Egg/meat production?
I'm thinking about breeding them. Any complications with this...
Today I'm thankful for...
1. For my family and the wonderful times we have together!
2. For my extended family and all of our great discussions!
3. For having found and settled in a new home!
4. For almost instantly connecting with a chicken crazy neighbor! :D
5. For all my pets!
6. For snow...
Who's ready for year 5 of spreading Christmas cheer throughout BYC and beyond?!?!
Like in our previous years (the first being 2019), here are some suggestions for something you can do everyday to light the world! These are not rules, but guidelines. Feel free to switch things up to suit you...
I aim to take and replace roughly 1/2 to 3/4s of the container daily.
I've also heard that adding water prevents mold, but I've never had a problem with this. It would probably be a good idea in warmer climates though where mold grows quickly. The biggest pro I've found to adding a layer of...
Yes, so long as it is above 32 degrees F. Do note though that in colder temperatures the fermentation process is slowed down, so if you take over half of the food every day the ferment might not be able to keep up and it might be best to start a second bucket and rotate them daily so you're...
I love the variety of colors, personalities, and egg shades in a mixed breed flock! But I also breed.
I currently don't have chickens but when I restart I plan to get back my Barred Holland breeding flock (who lay white and off-white eggs). Then I'll get some Ameraucanas or Easter/Olive Eggers...
She's a good judge so I don't doubt that they were White Hollands, but I do wonder if they recreated them. I've thought about doing that myself if they really were extinct.
Ooh, sounds nice! I'd rather have cold winters than hot summers. In our place in Idaho the winters were wet and miserable but not super cold, but the summers were hot. Chickens typically did alright, but it wasn't good for rabbits. Oh, and fall is pretty muddy so you have to spread out leaves or...
Hi! I see you're from Missouri. My family has thought about moving there. What's it like keeping chickens there? Do you have to take any winter or summer precautions? Is the humidity a problem?
Winters in my area were super mild, but this coop was amazing. Probably my favorite winter coop. I would not prop the windows open as far, but there was still plenty of ventilation. The one thing that displeased me was that sometimes a couple hens would roost on top of the nesting boxes. In...
Hello! Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been active on here lately.
There were two official nesting boxes, though I added a removable one on the floor after I got silkies. According to my notes, the boxes are 2 1/2 feet off of the floor. They are 20" by 14", and 13" tall.
Sorry for the late reply, I have not been active on here lately.
:welcome Welcome to the flock! It's good to have you!
We ended up moving and are currently living on the road. I didn't get BSF before we left, though I would like to get them once we settle down again. You could try making a post...
Have you read The Mansion? It's a short little book, a good read around Christmas, that says exactly what you just did.
A very rich man did many charitable things on earth, though he made sure to always receive credit for his acts. He was allowed to visit heaven for a short while and found that...
I feel the exact same way! I sometimes have to remind myself of the quote, "You have two ears and one mouth. Use them accordingly."
But this is also my favorite of the twelve days, even if I have to bite my tongue a bit.:p It's so fun to learn about other people's birds and their personalities...
Some people have issues with oatmeal (cooked and raw), but I think it's fine in moderation. It seems to me that cooked lentils and chia seeds would be fine too. I'm not sure about nuts. I've fed a bit to my chickens before mixed into the scrap bucket and they seemed fine, but it was barely any...
I love how their names fit them so well! The best thing about having a small flock is that you can see how personable and unique each chicken is. Enjoy your flock, they sound simply wonderful!
