Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Looks almost like something my hubby built on an old trailer frame. It works great but we had to fence off the underside. Too many of the flock didn't want to go in at night. Getting them out from under so they wouldn't become racoon dinner was a real back breaker. Not to mention they liked to...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

The best tasting meat/eggs we ever had from our chickens and pigs was the year we couldn't get pre mixed feed and supplemented with barley, garden waste and scraps / forage. If we ever get pigs again Barley is our go to!

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

One of our happiest Summers with back yard babies was when we raised Turkeys. Soft coos and gentle natures. I was even able to shepherd them around the property every afternoon for fresh forage. Our supplier stopped business. I've been on the look out for a heritage breed we could propagate ever...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Well yes, life has been busy. How time flies. For the last few years I've been wanting Silkies. Not because they are irresistibly cute but because we worried about power outages or the ability to afford a new incubator as prices go up and supply chains faulter. Silkies are heralded as being...

    Organ?

If I had to guess it may be bruising/pooled blood. Did you find this in every bird? How did you dispatch them? Killing cone? Holding down and removing the head? In very large meat birds I have also seen globes of white or cream colored fat which my husband, a Quebec butcher, calls "Suif du...

What Would You Do? Giving shipped eggs to broody bantam.

Yes, she is in great condition. Her first hatch is 8 weeks old now and have been on their own since 5 weeks. I separated them once she started laying again. Thanks for your input :)

What Would You Do? Giving shipped eggs to broody bantam.

Monday I excitedly received 48 Barred Rock eggs from B.C. Canada. I let them sit 48 hours and they have been in my incubator ever since. So that would make 2 full days in the incubator without rotation. Today my good mama Bantam Wyandotte Golden Lace hen went full blown broody on me again. She...

Final Count: 7 Canadian Blue Bresse and 9 Bantam Wyandotte Golden Lace. Only 30% hatch rate on the shipped eggs but they did come a very long way. Sorry for the delayed post but we are battling flooding with the big thaw up here. Here are the pictures!
