    Free range unattended?

We too live in a rural area. We have a couple acres and I have seen raccoons, foxes, coyotes, fishers, bears, bobcats, hawks, eagles, osprey and so on. We decided that we are likely to lose chickens here and there and have come to accept it. We have anywhere from 12-20 layers and no roosters. We...

    Duckings arrived in terrible shape!

We had a similar experience with chicks last week. We ordered from Meyer in Ohio, we are in WI. Last year our chicks were delivered in 2 days, all happy and healthy. This year it took 3 days with most chicks being weak or dead when we got them. The most frustrating part was USPS did not have...

Best brand of feed that you trust?

We used to get a local feed mills in house batch and the chickens loved it and did well on it. They since stopped making it in house so we switched to purina. We usually use start n grow all the time but when that is not in stock we have used the all flock which is just as good in my opinion. My...

Anyone bought Black Copper Marans from Meyer

Anyone that has ordered black copper marans from Meyer Hatchery able to verify how dark the eggs are? I saw some people post that Murray McMurray fbcm have nice dark eggs when considering hatchery stock. I have one from Cackle and we get darker eggs, but nothing to get excited about. I see Meyer...

    Help with existing coop please!

I would second using screws with washers or larger heads instead of staples as most predators (raccoons for sure) can push the staples right out.

Hen is Laying ‘Ghost Eggs’-Goes into nest box every day, no egg

You could try transitioning them to an all flock and supplement with free choice oyster shell. That offers the higher protein content that may be causing the production reduction.

    Huge egg

I am no expert but assuming it is fertilized it would hatch. The only concern would be if the egg had multiple yolks it could cause a problem as multiples do not develop as well for whatever reason. If you can confirm the presence of a single yolk versus 2 yolks it should be just fine.

    Feeder Dilemma

I made PVC feeders like the ones mentioned above. I can easily disassemble them for cleaning and as the previous post above calls out the 3in are about perfect. Depending on how muc feed you want you can customize the height as to store more of less feed. I love them and the chickens do a good...

Hen is Laying ‘Ghost Eggs’-Goes into nest box every day, no egg

I have chickens do the same thing. We like to call it taking a vacation. With ours they would get back into the normal routine over the course of time. Something we noticed is we would see it more often when they would change diets. For example if they were getting too many treats they would...

Old dog kennel/chain link fence predator proof??

Do you have pictures? You said you have hardware cloth around the run to prevent raccoons from pulling them through the fence which would be my biggest concern. As long as the roof is secure and you have an apron of hardware cloth or some other method to prevent access to digging under the...

    Egg Trend?

We see that from time to time with our ladies as well. I wouldn’t worry about it unless it starts happening consistently. A lot can happen during the time the egg is developing so if that is the only blip over the course of a year I would think you are doing just fine.

Brooder: Is a porch ok for new chicks? (temperature?)

We have used bit heat plates and the lamps. Will never go back to the lamp. The heat plates will work just fine outside in cold temps as you are seeing. The only benefit we saw with the lamp over the plates is you can’t see your chicks at all times under the plate so if one is getting squished...

    Slow grower

Do you have multiple feeders? She might be eating well when you are around but maybe when you are not she is being pushed around and cannot get to the feed consistently. Just a thought.
