I would second using screws with washers or larger heads instead of staples as most predators (raccoons for sure) can push the staples right out.

You could try transitioning them to an all flock and supplement with free choice oyster shell. That offers the higher protein content that may be causing the production reduction.

I am no expert but assuming it is fertilized it would hatch. The only concern would be if the egg had multiple yolks it could cause a problem as multiples do not develop as well for whatever reason. If you can confirm the presence of a single yolk versus 2 yolks it should be just fine.

We see that from time to time with our ladies as well. I wouldn’t worry about it unless it starts happening consistently. A lot can happen during the time the egg is developing so if that is the only blip over the course of a year I would think you are doing just fine.

Do you have multiple feeders? She might be eating well when you are around but maybe when you are not she is being pushed around and cannot get to the feed consistently. Just a thought.
