    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

Thanks 🙏🏼 She had her first night outside in my brooder coop last night. No bandages, just fresh pellet bedding and Neosporin. She has the hurdle of walking up & down the hutch ramp left to learn. But think we will save that lesson for a couple weeks - let her get more confidence in her...

    Easter Egger Gender Guess

The white & black EE is a rooster (crows) 😁 The brown one seems female (no crowing and gets along with the B&W well)

I let Polly run around outside in the big run with her future flock and her bandage came off. It was not bleeding so I let her run around with them in the dirt run. Afterwards I gave it a betadine soak, sprayed with antibiotic dermaplast, snapped some pictures and decided to let her keep the...

    Roooo or Hen???

I thought so too at first but then noticed how much smaller the waddle (is that the right word?) was compared to the confirmed roo

    Roooo or Hen???

Born on 3/13 - so about 10.5 weeks. (All of the chickens in the photo are the same age) Back story - I raised some chicks for a friend in my brooder until they were fine to be outside without a heat source. The chicks are no longer at my home and my friend is struggling to get a good photo and...

    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

Yes she is still getting oral antibiotics-I’m assuming I keep going until the bottle runs out 🤷🏼‍♀️ Figured I’d call the vet and take her in for a visit after a bit. I took one of our dogs in a couple days ago and the vet asked about Polly and I showed him the pics…He said Polly looks good and...

    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

We just changed the bandage. I snapped this pic tonight, then soaked it in Betadine soapy water for a smidgen (not great long soak just long enough for my husband to prepare a new bandage) sprayed some antibacterial dermaplast, then wrapped her up in a new bandage with Neosporin directly on the...

    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

I saw those on Amazon for around $25 I am HOPEFUL she will just get on with her stump because it would be less maintenance. However if she needs protection it’s an option as is wrapping the end with vet wrap - just curious how it will heal - when a human leg is amputated they cover the end...

    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

Thoughts on how it will heal & a padded wrap just for “comfort” or so you think it will callous when there’s no real “skin” on the end?

Wish I could post a video - she was flying up trying to roost - and so I sat her up there with her friend (brought one of the more gentle chicks in to be her friend) they cuddle and she is less squaky with her friend, now I just hear little content chirps. Anyhow she roosted for a tealllly...

    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

Sorry to spam play by play happenings & thoughts…. But a new update just happened unexpectedly… Her bandage fell off…so we quickly added Neosporin to a fresh bandage and wrapped it back up. I snapped a few photos when the bandage was off…so we can compare on the healing journey… it’s swollen...

    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

If someone noticed the bandage was blue and is now pink…I just wrapped new vet wrap lower so she could have use of her “hock” “elbow” (not sure of technical term for her bendy part) I have not removed the telfa pad & wrap (there is a plasticy cast like bandage under the vet wrap ~ which I have...

Soooo update on the vet Apparently this was his first bird amputation and so there was a degree of uncertainty in how what where etc….he's been a vet for at least 50 years and works on birds and chickens as well as rats, dogs, cats, pigs, hamsters, etc…(he’s a country vet, and works on what is...

    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

Oh wow…super helpful!!! THANK YOU ❤️ At night I have been bringing in some of her siblings to sleep with and they seem to quiet her down. And I take her out to “visit” when I feed the other chickens. I’m hoping she isn’t forgotten over time and remains solid in her flock of siblings without...

    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

Lots of loved critters here, but THIS ONE is the one that is very jealous of the attention Polly is getting! 😂 She literally climbed into my lap after I put Polly back in her cage and she is NOT a small dog! NOT A LAP DOG FOR SURE! The other dogs and critters could care less Polly is getting my...

    gangrene / amputation? (Photos)

Yes he’s old school vet…reasonable and logical He wavered back and forth on the anesthesia but when thoughts of infection came into play he decided the delayed toe and very small amount of blood flow might delay the self amputation longer then needed and if there was infection it might be best...

The update is on Page 4 at the bottom…I’ve noticed on my phone and iPad the forums skip some posts or maybe they just take a while to load? Weird on my other device it’s page 2…. Anyhow the update is a few posts back

Gosh I failed to answer every question - sorry - the toe that looked good had some circulation but limited. The toe was beginning to turn black at the tip (by the nail) and today it was all black. So in time it too was gunna go. 😢 I do worry that the cage she’s in isn’t big enough to flap her...

Oh and I can keep roosters. I currently have three (one is posed to be dinner but I haven’t the nerve yet to kill it) two Roos is generally my max, but can have three since I have three separate runs/hutches/flocks. This procedure was $100 total.
