I'm in SC also and my hens production is way down. I've checked everything with mine too and except for one of the Wydottes losing some feathers they seem fine. Looking forward to some cooler nights next week and hoping that will help with the laying.
Got the first egg from our White Rock, at least I think that's who laid it. She's right around 15 weeks old. The other one is from our EE. Getting 3/6. Have a hawk flying around so the girls may be stressed. It's not a chicken hawk but it still makes them uneasy.
We have clover that grows in our yard and pull some for the chickens. Mine will eat the green but not what I call the flower bud. Mine also love the weeds in the flower beds - chickweed is one of them. If the chickens can get to where you are planting the seeds, they will tear it up so screen it...
If you have some type of furniture store around, go and ask them for a large box. Where I live, there is a container behind the furniture store where they put the boxes. We just get them from there. You can break them down and then re-tape at home. Even interior designer stores order furniture...
I find my buff orpington and my EE to be the friendliest hens. The barred rock will come to me when called and can be handled. The wyandottes don't are pretty but don't like to be handled and the light brahmas are friendly enough but noisy, they sound like a goose when they lay an egg and tend...
These are my EEs, The photo on the top left has a hen (left) and roo (right). The next photo is the roo at about 14 weeks. He started to crow at 15 weeks. The photo on the bottom is the same roo all grown up at a little over a year old. He was/is very friendly. I couldn't keep him but was...
Here's a photo of my cardboard condo for my chicks. They are about 3 weeks old here. The water bottle is hanging from an old shower curtain rod that is on the top of the box. Instead of doggy pads in the bottom (didn't think of them), I used an old dog food bag opened up and taped it in then...
I got 2 buffs and a white rock for Valentine's day from my husband. I named one of my buffs Peep because of the sound she makes. My husband calls her Pete and the other buff re-pete. Now the names have stuck.
you will need to look at her droppings. Look online for images of worms that chickens get and that will help - will also be gross! These suggestions are based on my experiences. good luck
have you fed them anything in addition to the regular layer food? If I give mine too much bread or fruit scraps and scratch over several days, I notice their combs get pale. Also if they are going into molt or have worms the combs get pale. It could just be because she's just started to lay.
Here's a photo of how I have mine set up. I only have 9 hens but if you have room you could hand 2 of them. This is for them to eat out of if it's raining or I have to keep them penned up because of hawks. It hangs under what I use as the poop board and nothing gets in it. I try to only throw...
