I never thought I'd consider heating my coop, but this last cold snap had us below 20°F for several days. We have our first case of mild frostbite. Coop is ventilated.
I don't want a heat lamp. I was considering something like heated pipe wrap on the walls or under the bottom. Just curious if...
I switched to a nipple waterer in a five gallon bucket for winter. It's got a heater inside, but the Nipples are already freezing. It's only 20 today and expected to be colder the next few days. Any tips?
Settle this argument. 😉
I bought a box of Christmas cards. There are four style of cards.
One says happy holidays, mentions the season inside, etc. But no mention of Christmas, the rest do. This is the card in question.
We have a card exchange at our little church in a small town (I'm...
I have two hens that don't seem to be molting. They are the only ones still laying. It's a young flock so this is the first molt for everyone. They have pretty rough looking plumage. Are they just later than everyone or is something amiss?
My EEs are waking up at 530 and not quiet about it. I'm in town so I would like to curb this behavior, if possible.
Would dark fabric over the hardcloth windows help? Is there anything breathable enough?
I just tried my first water glassing in a large gallon jar. I measured water and lime, but did not leave quite enough room for displacement.
I want to put more eggs in, but I have to remove water and that mixes up the ratio, right?
Do I have to leave it as is?
I want to attempt to keep eggs for next winter. Is there a method besides water glassing that anyone here has tried? I read about mineral oil but dunno anyone who has done it.
Thanks
I have a hen that has become a complete A hole. She's kind of a rooster to the flock (no males present).
She's a good layer, so I don't want to remove her, but she's chasing the dog and sometimes comes after me and I'm over it. I've tried holding her down a couple times, but no improvement...
My year old Ameracauna is acting a bit off. She hasn't laid in a few days. Has a tucked in appearance sometimes. She eats, drinks, forages, poops, roosts, etc. most of the time.
I thought she was egg bound and treated for it for a couple days but I can't feel any egg.
Crop is fine. No squishy...
I've a year old Ameracauna who I believe is egg bound.
She hasn't laid in a couple days and she tends to lay daily. She has a slightly tucked in appearance. She still eats and drinks. She sat in the nest box but was unsuccessful.
I have done two Epsom salt baths, after which she expelled a...
I have a 10x4 coop. I used to have it on the ground, filled with shaving and leaves. Bedding lasted three months with no issue.
We started having some issue with rain getting in so we put a floor on and elevated the coop.
Now my bedding stinks after just 3 weeks. What an I doing wrong...
So, started fermenting feed about a week ago. They get it in the morning and then free access to pellets. Girls are outside eating what they can forage.
Anyway, there are massive poops now. Like egg size or bigger. I am not concerned, just was curious if this usually happens.
My EE has a very pronounced beard and I noticed today the feathers are frozen. She's always been a sloppy drinker.
No signs of frostbite. We'll be above freezing tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.
Do I need to thaw it or is she good?
I have 9 pullets and two nesting boxes. Only 3 actively laying.
My first problem is my newest layer, an EE, who has never used the box. She's only been laying for a couple weeks but never in the box. Even when it's empty, clean, etc. I keep the boxes super clean. I have fake eggs inside. Ideas...
I'm converting my tractor into a permanent position, which includes adding a floor.
I currently use deep bedding with leaves and shavings on ground. No complaints.
Since I'm adding a wood floor, I'm wondering if a layer of dirt below the fresh bedding makes sense. I see people use sand, but...
THE storm is currently hitting us. Girls were out this morning. Inside coop now but I noticed the snow is blowing inside the door. I worry about moisture inside. Am I overthinking this?
I have a bare floor tractor coop that we're leaving stationery for winter. It's on gravel and dirt. I already have a few inches of some shavings and lots of leaves. No issues.
We are expecting overnight temps below 0F, so I'm looking for input on what works well for warmth and still keeps...
