    Health inspection cost?

Has anyone recently paid for health inspecting on their chickens? While i know every vet is different, we only have a few within comfortable house call range, so am trying to get a general idea of standard costs. So far I've been quoted $250. Each. 37 chickens. 20 quail. Seriously? I'm...

Headed over here for a Gender assist

The internet is full of conflicting info. I'm trying to sex these two 3 month old guineas. They are twins as far as head shape, wattle, comb, cheeks flaps, etc. They act like my chicken hens, more than my chicken roosters - (chickens for 7 years) but that's all I've to go on as far as...

    The (ugh!) Internet

Has so many conflicting points of info. Pictures showing both genders with and without helmets and wattles! These (just plain, no fancy names that i know of) guineas are three months old. Male or female? Anyone? Please? They act like regular old chicken hens, get along great in the all girl...

    My lap chicken diva

Not a pet person, honestly. This little girl is a lap chicken, despite that. I don't encourage it, simply because, well, I'm not really one who thinks chickens are "pets". I don't eat them, hardly ever eat eggs. I just like having them around. You never see them grooming each other...

Why do you think chickens dirt bath

So I've heard it all from parasite prevention and treatment to cooling to heating to molting itch. None of that makes sense to me. I honestly think, after 7 years of watching chickens from hatch to old age dying, i believe it's to kill their scent. Hide from predators. Ideas?

    Help ID bantams?

Only two or of 13 survived my 1$each sale purchase at TSC. Sad. They were varied breeds. I don't know this breed. Any help? Oh they have heavily feathered feet.

    Those grey "pearl island leghorns"

That aren't actually leghorns at all, lol, i bought at TSC.i finally got decent pics. Funny thing, they have Mohawks. ??! I have had a few sapphire gem hens. I think maybe this is them, too. Any ideas? Good layers. Mine were daily.

    Oddball question

We are thinking of expanding our flocks into more than chickens and turkeys. We arent breeders, just love our birds. I'm a beef and pork girl, so our birds live long spoiled lives. 40 chickens, 22 quail and 6 turkeys at the moment. We've been looking at pigeons and peacocks. The odd question...

    Truly noisy?

Are peacocks truly a noisy as everyone says? I've been considering investing in a pair. They wouldn't free range without supervision, too many predators here, but noise constancy is a concern. I confess i despise my daughter's turkeys until they are about 3 years old. They're fine in mature...

    I'm loving quail

So I'm new to quail, other than the million wild ones around here. We invested in 30 recently, and I'm in love. The babies were so tiny. 11 didn't make the trip but (hatchery order) they sent extras against that eventuality so we ended up with 22. Now I'm wondering, why can't i keep a...

Did you actually learn to drive?

I'm asking because i don't think you did. I've got baby chicks in here and my truck is bigger than your car... off you pop! Back to school dummy.

    What's your dream?

I live in far northern Maine for the last 7 years and i confess i hate it. I'm headed back to Louisiana soon. My dream place will have a 10' high hurricane fence where my chick's can "free range" without fear. Some of those fancy coops, maybe. Where they (and i) can go outside without...

    And it's a mystery chick

Pics to follow of the slightly older chicks, but to get started, this 2day pic. For the 2 week pics, I have to wait til its warmer today so the colors show up. So these lovely ladies were billed as Pearl Star Leghorns. Grey...?? No LH in either parent of this breed! Sussex hen and Barred Rock...

    The "Chicken Little" stage

I have raised more than 80 chickens at this point, and i notice one consistent thing across all breeds - the chicken little stage. I get the babies, ordered or from TSC, and fresh out of the box i handle them daily. Chickens aren't really petting animals, they don't groom each other even...

Sorghum equals less or no eggs

So year before last all 40 of my starter flock stopped laying within a week of each other. I changed coop arrangements, fenced, then free ranged, rooster then no roo, followed all the advice i found here. Nothing worked. In autumn i moved them into winter coops and still, maybe 5-7 eggs from...

    Dying bantam babies (long)

On this past Friday i bought the last 13 bantams at TSC for my daughter. They were on sale for 1$ each, so what the heck. Throw a separate smaller elevated coop together in 4 hours. Got them home, transferred them to the 95⁰ brooder, checked their eating and drinking was all good. I saw the...

    TSC hatcheries, ugh

No idea what this chick is. It was advertised as a Pearl Star Leghorn, and I've never tried those though IM a fan of leghorns. But looked them up at home, and the Sussex and Barred Rock parentage of PSLs should never have grey chicks, right? The super-fine down and round body makes me think...

    Turkey poult with TWO vents

Ok, so a blue eyed chick and now a turkey poult with TWO vents. One vent to the right and one vent to the left of his tail stub. We got him to "fix" from the local stores where they don't like to dispatch the babies. This one was presumed prolapsed, but after removing the huge poop paste on its...

    EYE spy?!

I've 4 new easter eggers, this is one, but has anyone seen an eye like this before? This is my first round of easter eggers, and brings me up to 40 chickens have raised so far. Oh they grow up so fast, lol If anyone has seen this, what does it potentially indicate? If anything? Pics dont do it...

    Calling all guinea owners

To all guinea owners Advice solicited on keet raising anyone I ordered ten, split them with a neighbor and kept six (space issues) 4 died right away, same and next day. But two are splendidly growing. Here's my questions; Baby chicks actually tame down really well around my house, lol...
