I've been posting pictures of my horsehair baskets in the handcrafted thread from time to time, but thought I'd start my own. Hopefully no one minds. :)
I've been making horsehair jewelry and other keepsakes for about 15 years now, and just within the last year, ventured into making coiled...
Our daughter bought this lovely pair of bantam cochins last year, and I don't think I've seen this color in them before. I was thinking lavender (self blue), but the hen has what look to be mille fleur speckles on her feathers. Is there a different name for her color, or do they both fall...
Hatched in 2023 (no idea when) and advertised as a male. I find it hard to tell males from females as juveniles...
The pictures are crummy, but he(?) does have yellow cheeks.
This hen is about a year old, and when we picked her up, we noticed she has blue eyes. I read that blue eyes could mean that they carry either a white gene or a pied gene. Or sometimes their eyes are just blue. Can anyone tell from the pics if she could be carrying anything other than BS?
This is Atom and Joule. :) They are both about two years old. Atom came to us through a very unusual set of circumstances, and he's come a long way, health-wise. They are both very valued members of our family. :)
This little guy is one of our barnyard mix babies that we hatched out this year. He's a bunch of different breeds, I'm sure, but I'm more interested in his color. We don't have any others like him, and I was wondering if his color/pattern has an actual name. I'm sure not...but figured I'd...
My mom called me early this morning to tell me that my niece had opened up Mom's coop and found a dead chicken. The coop is old, but has been well predator-proofed, and nothing has gotten in since she started keeping chickens. Unfortunately, they were a little late closing the coop up last...
We have two female Guineas that our roosters are very interested in. Today, when using a couple of their eggs, we noticed they are definitely fertile. That of course led me to thinking...what would happed if we incubated them? I know guinea/chicken hybrids can happen, but what are the odds of...
Another great Christmas gift! Resin/alcohol ink coasters. They can also be used as wall art, or suncatchers. They're 4" in diameter, and about 3/8" thick. These can be made in any color or combination of colors (no limit on colors, although the more you add, the more you run the risk of...
We ordered a couple silver lakenvelders from Hoover's Hatchery, along with a bunch of other chicks. We have identified every other breed, so that only leaves these black chicks as possible lakenvelders. The pictures of the lakenvelder chicks online show more white than these babies have, but...
We have a tiny game bird bantam named Dove who decided to go broody at the edge of the field next to our house. We have been having terrible issues with raccoons lately, and when she disappeared, we feared the worst. Thankfully, we found her and her clutch before anything bad happened to them...
So lately I've been making orders to TSC online and using curbside pickup, which has been great for keeping me from perusing the chick bins inside the store. Today though, I had to make a somewhat unexpected trip inside. I just thought I'd quickly glance at the chicks...they had several bins of...
Our oldest babies are almost 4 weeks old already! We have chicks from two broodies, and 4 that were hatched by my nieces' teacher.
And our little babies are already a week old. :)
We have ended up having to do a staggered incubation and hatch this time. It certainly wasn't by choice, but the eggs we bought have become available at different times. The first batch went into the incubator two days ago, and the other two batches won't be going in until late this coming...
We are just finishing up a pretty successful hatch, but I've noticed the babies seem to have a lot of "hatching goo" attached to them, which dries and makes their down hard. We took a toothbrush and gently brushed it off, and now most are super fluffy. They're all very healthy and hatched...
We have two chicks--one 9 days old and one just hatched today who are the same cross. The mother is a buff rock (all buff colored), and the father is a white silkie (all white). Both of these babies were born buff colored with some black chipmunk striping! The older baby now has wing feathers...
I ordered two different sets of hatching eggs a few days ago. One box arrived today (in gorgeous shape with all air cells intact!), and the other box didn't. So now it's going to be Monday probably when they get here. My question is this: I'd like to set the first box of eggs along with a...
