Is 35 degrees too cold for chickens?

My coop has plywood walls on all four sides and small vents at the top. My four chickens (Orpington, Australorp, RIR, and Polish) are all about 8 months old. Recently it's been about 45-65 degrees during the day, and about 35-45 degrees at night. Do we need any extra heat? I still have a heat...

My first two eggs - on the same day!!

What a suprise when I woke up from loud chicken squawking and headed lazily to the coop. I didn't even bother to check the nesting box. But I glanced over, and oh my gosh. that is NOT what i think it is!!! But it was! It was around 7:30 in the morning. Then, later, around 9:30 I went back ot...

my chicken's leg is ... lame?

Hi, Some not-so-happy news from me today. I came back from a 3 day vacation to see one of my four chickens sitting down. And for a while, she didn't stand up. I then picked her up and noticed her foot was curled in so that the top of her foot was touching the ground. She didn't uncurl it. I...

60 degree weather OK for 6 week old chicks?

Just what the subject says! The weather hovers around the 60's nowadays. There's a fence around the yard, but I prefer watching them. I'm pretty sure it's OK if its not wet/raining ...? I could be wrong ... Thanks Adrienne

Do they need to see the vet?

I'm not sure this goes under "Emergencies" but whatever. I was wondering if my 6-week old chicks need to have a checkup at the vet at all. Or anytime. Just to see how they're doing? I dunno if I have to see the vet at all, just making sure. Thanks, Adrienne

Yay or nay, floor of run to keep it dry?

Ok, so I'm assembling the coop and we are planning a roof to the run. I have grass in my backyard right now and intend to let them free range when I'm around. My run is 4'x6'. I'm thinking of digging up that area (keeping the dirt) and putting a layer of sand down. Then putting all the dirt back...

Anyone in Portland that can tell me a lil about its predators?

I live south of Portland, and was wondering what kinds of predators there are and how to prevent them. I'm pretty sure we have coons, coyotes, and hawks, but coyotes can't get over our fence so I'm not worried abotu them as much. I don't want to spend too much on predator safety but I don't want...

small and slightly dumb question ...

The feeder and waterer go in the run, right? I'm sorry I'm being so slow. I've heard they also should be raised? Would putting them on bricks work as well? thanks Adrienne

Please post pics of chicks ready 2 move outside!!

I have a wide age range of chicks. They are 4 weeks, 3 1/2 weeks, and 2 weeks. I've heard you move them out when they are fully feathered (roughly 5-8 weeks?) Can you please post pix of your "fully feathered" chicks so I can get an idea of when to move them outside? Thanks!! Adrienne

My chick poops in my hand!!

My chicks don't like me to pick them up? When I finally catch one, she poops in my hand, for the 3rd time!! She has taught the others this strategy as well, and it works fairly well I have to admit. I have to go get a tissue and put her back in the brooder. They run away if I try to get near...

    4 week old ... Roo?

    Worried!!!

I am sooo worried about my baby chicks! My Plymouth Rock is about a week (and maybe a half) older than the others. She's flighty, aggressive, and incredibly smart. She flies to sit on top of the feeder and rests their all day. All of my chicks have a habit of pecking at the cedar shavings of...

    carrot shavings ...

I made some carrot juice today and I have the scraps (you know, ground up carrot) and I figured why not feed it to the chicks? They went crazy once they realized it was food, but then I saw runny poop all over the place. Was this because of the carrots?
