    Hatching Eggs - Journal

Hatching eggs is exciting. My first time around I could not stop watching them. After incubating several times it still is fascinating. Wait till they hatch the obsession gets intense. Have fun!

Reasons for not sharing your flock

You have a beautiful rainbow of eggs. I believe the hassle may be one reason. Another is they are concerned that some will not stay true to the breeds maybe.

June 1, first day of hurricane season, prepardness & information running thread

Yup went to Costco and purchased batteries. We keep a pantry of goods for hurricane season. Have propane filled up. Living in FL means you need to keep things on hand. We do not live in a coastal community but we have had damage from storms such as Irma that ran up the spine of the state in...

Question of the Day - Saturday, June 1st, 2024

Some random one. Like others I typically keep my ringer off. I have my Garmin watch connected via Bluetooth so it vibrates when a call, email or text is received. I ignore that a lot too.

Are my eggs losing enough weight?

I hear you. I was as well. All other hatching experience was using the typical standard of keeping humidity at 50 and raising to 60-70 during hatching. One thing I will mention is I live in FL where humidity is a part of everyday life. The first 18 days the humidity was about 25 to 30%. I...

Are my eggs losing enough weight?

I did my first dry hatch in a Maticoopx 30 last month. I did not use water in the incubator until day 18 and then I only filled the smallest channel with water. Only time the humidity went up over 50% was when chicks hatched which always brings the humidity up. Some who dry hatch never add...

That is unfortunate that you cannot have roosters. Totally understand.

Welcome to the chicken hut. Yeah Roosters happen even if you bought female chicks only. I have two speckled Sussex, at least one ISA Brown (I think they are that breed) and one buff Orpington roosters that where to all FFC (future female chickens). Roosters make great warning alarms and lawn art.

    SWEETS-THEMED HATCH-ALONG IS HERE!🍦🧁🍫🍬🍭🍩🍪🍰

Time does fly when hatching chicks. It doesn’t seem so the first few days but then all of the sudden you need to stop turning and just sit on your hands for the hatching to commence.

    Speckled Sussex Pullets or Cockerels

We are new owning Speckled Sussex. Ours is coming up on 8 weeks and we can tell that we have one cockerel (they were all to be hens) and possibly a second one. One has a prominent cone and wattles appearing. The other has a cone and little wattles. The rest do not show a cone nor wattles at...

Found baby chick on our porch

We raised a single chick once as a storm disrupted electric during incubation. He was the only one who made it. His name was clearly “Stormy”. We put a small stuffed animal in his brooder box with him. It should help keep it from chirping for attention. As a matter of fact Stormy had his...
