    BDutch's bantam flock & natural breeding projects #5 🪺 🪺 and #6

Nope. I don't want more than 4 or 5 chicks. The main reason is: I really had too many problems with 9 chicks last year. The hens probably thought there were too many invaders and didn’t want the chicks to roost in the coop extension (the main roosting area). Didnt have such problems before...

    BDutch's bantam flock & natural breeding projects #5 🪺 🪺 and #6

I bought 6 bantam Amrock eggs today, and got 4 extra as a present. 🎁 When I got home I weight the eggs, because they looked so big. 40-50 g is standard. But these eggs were 50-55 g. I contacted the owner and she said the Amrocks weren’t big at all, bc her bantam Wyandotte are the same size. If...

This is what a balanced layer feed with no treats delivers

I subscribe this view on feed. Its also said that chickens know whats best for them if they free range. But you need a garden where there is plenty of food in variety for them. Giving scratch once a day and no layer at all is a good and healthy possibility in such circumstances. But...

This is what a balanced layer feed with no treats delivers

Yes and I don’t believe that commercial layer feed is optimised for backyard chickens. The feed for organic commercial hens is differently balanced in nutrients as the layer feed for hens who don’t get out. Fyi/inEU: The organic kept hens have much more space inside, they are never caged...

The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

So sorry for the death chick and your loss. How come you are not sure it is or isn’t Haris. ? Cant you can put the Serama babies in a cardboard box with many holes for ventilation at night? That probably reduces the chance something goes wrong a second time.

My neighbors chickens are constantly in my yard ....

Can you catch them? Bc clipping their wings surely helps not to be able to fly over it.

Pearl and Tintin Ini mini and Katrientje Things can change rapidly with chickens. Kraai didn’t seem to know or she should be broody or not be broody. The tiny coop with the chicken door is definitely a no go. Black became broody too on Saturday on freshly laid real eggs in the normal laying...

Coronavirus, Covid 19 Discussion and How It Has Affected Your Daily Life Chat Thread

Getting such health problems after covid vaccination is rarely caused by the vaccinations. The fact that heart attacks (myocarditis or pericarditis) occurs after vaccination does not mean that the vaccine is always the cause. In my country 3 suspected death occurred. (18 million people in NL)...

How do you decide what rooster to keep?

I wouldn’t keep a full grown cockerel or young rooster that defends his harem. Not with young children, unless he is caged 24/7 and children have no acces. Take the next step (or not) after his hormones have settled and you learned how he behaves.

Chick starter food out of stock, need advice

I ordered organic starter last year to pick up at the mill, they gave me a bag for broilers and I asked around. People said it was fine to give to all chicks. I did add water to make a mash because the pellets were too big for my tiny bantam chicks. They did great on the organic broiler feed...

How do you decide what rooster to keep?

Talk to the neighbours who might be annoyed. Nice if they don’t mind the crowing. If they do mind a rooster that’s loud, keep the one that has the warmest voice and isn’t too loud. In the past I have given all my roosters away for being too loud early in the morning. This year I try to keep my...

    No pips on day 22

I have no experience with incubatores, only broodies and eggs I picked up myself. The time to hatch is influenced by circumstances. Up to day 24 is very well possible they hatch. If you consider to open one egg, do read more about assisted hatch first. I know there is an article on that...

Hi, I wondered what poultry you have and why you joined. Your thread: Incubating ducks and chicks was helpful. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/ducks-and-chicks.1625641/ Hope someone will answer your questions soon. I have no experience with it. There is a lot of good info in the...

    Hey, I am incubated!

Welcome! Good luck with incubating. How many eggs? What breed(s)? What kind of incubator do you have? Do you already have chickens and a coop? Did you buy hatchery eggs? Be prepared for a setup for chicks in time: you need a brooder/chick cage, heat plate or heat lamp, water and chick feed...
