Official BYC Poll: Do Your Chickens Go Inside Their Coop When It Snows?

Mine decide for themselves whether to stay outside or go inside. They usually don't care how the weather is, especially my middle aged and younger ones. My older group don't mind getting damp and some light snow but heavier stuff, they're heading back in. They'll watch from a window or the door.

    Female or male?

Thanks, my last 4 I was lucky and predicted I had 3 males and 1 female. Now I just have the 1 adult male and am hoping for some female company for him. I have seen him recently acting more "friendly" towards my hens but they walk away from him. The female I had prior never allowed the males near...

    Female or male?

I bought 3 several day old guineas about 2 1/2 weeks ago, so they're about 3 weeks now. This one sounds slightly different with the vocals than the other 2. There's almost a 2 part vocal when it chirps. You decide, my gut says female.

    The mama hen…is a rooster?

This was taken back on March 27, 2023 of both my 5 year old golden comet hen, Waddles and buff Brahma rooster, Bram with 24 CC Broiler chicks (5 & 6 wks). The hen has leg problems and the rooster had a traumatic brain injury where they couldn't be with the rest of the flock so I gave them a job...

    The mama hen…is a rooster?

I had a buff Orpington rooster that would set on eggs each evening until I collected them. Then he'd leave the nesting box and get on the roost. Never had a cracked or broken egg under him either. He's was always a gentle boy, I could cradle him like a baby.

Not upsetting, I've actually had people offer to butcher her and I tell them she's my "big kid" B.K. for short. When actually she's named after Burger King with their flame broiled whoppers but is a girl so I called her B.K. instead. Everyone (especially family) that's gotten to meet her seems...

I was also reading about vent gleet. She's exhibiting some of the same symptoms for it. I'm going to try adding ACV to the water, feed her some plain reduced fat yogurt and get some Miconazole to put on her vent area. It sure won't hurt.

She's definitely a pet. Her name is B.K., she and 3 others were spared from being butchered after it was found the people hired to butcher the rest didn't do things right. The other 3 died as the months went on. They had come to me from a friend at about 3-4 months old. She's eating/drinking...

She's has an occasional wheeze but not constantly. She's on layer feed free fed with a little scratch shared with her coop mates on nights predicted below 35 Fahrenheit. She doesn't gorge herself either, she eats a little and walks away. She behaves like a regular size hen except she's the size...

I have a 9 month old CC Broiler with some nasty whiteish smelly junk coming out her vent. Up to a few weeks ago she was laying nice huge eggs 3-4 times a week, then stopped. At the time everything looked ok. Today I noticed a foul smell in the coop and when I picked her up, it was her. I have...

Comment by 'wolfinator' in article 'How To Fix A Muddy Run Chicken Coop'

My 5 coops and 4 pens are a muddy mess but how do you keep an approximate 4000sqft area less messy. We've put in trenches to drain the bulk but the area is full of deep large holes from chickens making dust bath holes and from the ducks rooting. I've tried filling in the worst holes but they...

    Counting your chickens

Easiest way to count chickens is at night while they roost. That's when I count mine. I count my ducks after they've come in from free ranging, a task in itself because they don't roost. I corral them an let a few at a time get pass as I count. I've had the occasional "Where are they hiding?"...

    Breed of these babies...

So my boyfriend's grandson talked us into caring for a pair of ducklings he wanted at Rural King a few days ago. He actually lives in another state and isn't zoned for poultry. He's planning on moving about 3/4 miles up the road so he's getting a jump on acquiring some ducks for the pond that'll...
